Hello,
Here is my for installing the stock aircleaner in a type 3 using Weber ICT (or clones of ICT's ) carbs.
I'll let the pictures speak for themselves.
Sorry for the awfull looking weld... it was done in a hurry, but it's sturdy enough.
The ideea is to use the castings on the ICT's body that on other variations were used for having a manual choke. Drill those mountings and insert two M6 screws as my picture shows.
The linkage i've made is a DIY cable linkage needed in order to install the air filter. I've used good quality bike handbrake cable and conduit, the wire was lubed up prior to install and i've made sure that the wires and the conduit were exactly the same lengths.
I've done a couple of runs with this setup and it seem to function well.
One thing though ... the accelerator pedal feels stiffer because of the cable linkage.
Sorry also for the dirty and "run down" look of the motor - it's been put together on an Eastern Europe budget :D

That could be asked every time someone swapped Solex'es with ICT and still people do it... :)
In my particular case, the stock Solex carbs were busted, ( worn out) ,and after 3 weekes of fiddling with them , soakin in carb cleaner and so on, (while my car was either running rich, poofing black smoke, and yet beeing unable to run faster than 50kmh ) i got tired of that and replaced them.
A pair of "new" professional rebuild Solex carbs is out of my budget's reach.
Those carbs you see pictured there were less than 10 $ each. |

Not all of us like stock.
Kudo's for running weber's and keeping the stock air cleaner, all the purist's now won't having the usual "your drawing in hot air from the engine compartment" reply...damn does that one get old. |

the stock Solex's can breathe just as freely as the ICT's, and require NO modifications for the stock oil breather... on the other hand, the first chunk of metal that falls from that welded-together bolt in the throat of that ICT has the potential to destroy the engine...
and if you don't understand how breathing in hot air effects an engine's performance vs breathing in cold air, you are really missing the point... |

A chunk of metal falling from that welded bolt is the last thing that can happen ...
The weld itself is solid. The big bolt facing upwards it's held by the airfilter itself. The two horizontal bolts are held in place by having their hex head through the tight hole and outside the carb. Even if the assembly unbolts itself, it cannot fall into the carb.
And yeah.. for a stock aplication I value the Solex carbs, however, I have explained above (a couple of posts above, that is ) why i made this choice.
And I've posted this pictures hoping to inspire others that might want to do this (maybe to a non-stock aplication such as bigger engine and bigger carbs). |

I think I understand how IATs affect power/detention just fine. I got somewhere a dyno sheet for my Honda, first pull 371whp, second pull 355, third pull 350whp. Power went down as IATs went up. Most of you guys are running stock motors, high IATs aren't going to make a huge difference. Good stock parts are getting harder and harder to find.
I like seeing some creativity, that's what's going to keep these cars on the road. |

| let me trow my two cents in and say the position of the cross bolt right over top of the venturi isnt helping your airflow .stock carbs do run well with big engines if they are set up right. |

| ICTs can and will match all performance of a solex if set up correctly. also, $20 buck for a pair of carbs and time for the welding for a running car is a pretty cheap fix. some of us don't care about stock |

| All that metters is the owners opinion, gives a twist when u look at it. Thinkin stock set-up but wait its not. Looks cool but could use a lil clean up/perfection, but thats what we do with old VW's |

| any think pulling hot air from the engine compartment will cause the engine to run cooler? I'm thinking about doing the same mod, solely for the purpose of cooling the engine... |

one thing that comes to mind is ...how much air can you pull through the stock fresh air intake? I would say that would limit top end rpm since it is a small hole.
i have wondered why someone hasn't fabbed a thin/wide intake/ filter that spans the carbs (whichever flavor you like) and draws from both stock fresh air and from ahead of the transmission like the Cal-look cooling mod for beetles. it would just be bigger than the stock oil bath to flow more air.
must be those dark side cookies i had for lunch  |
