This is my 59 pan and I dont think its the same as 60 pan but someone said that might be the problem im having so thought I would post a pic to make sure.

Jason it Doesn't look like my 1960 mount. If your pan is a verified 1959 it's a different mount. 1960 is a one year only. You can see where it mounts directly to the torsion tube.

some one welded a 61-72 front mount onto the frame.

Yours looks like a normal 59' pan. Below is my 59' pan and the stock rubber front trans mount that sits between the pan and trans.

i missed that. yes the 61-72 would hang lower and be less bulky. look at how the clutch tube exits the nice 59 pan and the exit of tube from J.Eden's frame.bent? or just angle of picture?

Hi all.

After I recently purchased a early 1960 beetle, I have made some study regarding the "one year only" transmission mount - and why this was made..

I believe I found out why, and like to share it here.

Looking at the position of the transmission hockey stick - 1960 is the 1. model year where hockey stick location is placed in high position - see below picture:

The reason for moving the position of the hockey stick is written in this book published in California, 1960:

On page 176-177 the writer explain about the advantage of having negative camber on rear wheels, and how the VW factory made a change to the transmission fork starting on the 1960 model to improve negative camber:

This means that 1960 is the 1. model year where the engine & tranny unit is located at a slight angle:

Also starting at the 1960 model, this change of the rear fork also consist of a change of the screw bolt for the rear shock absorber:

- just a little detailed info regarding why 1960 has a "one year only" front transmission mount.

and this translates into the 60 only red handle dipstick because of the angle. One of the many pleasures of owning a stock 60

Yes, that makes sense. Because of the engine angle, the full mark indication on the oil stick were lowered 4 mm:

1960 only - Oil dipstick painted red (at chassis 2528668/engine 3072320).
The full mark was set 40mm from the end, rather than the previous 44mm. The add mark was not changed. Part #111-115-611-A

The red making must have been introduced, to ensure that you always use a correct oil dip stick on a 36HP engine in a 1960 car.

what are the measurements for the oil diptstick for uup to 1952 25hp, 53-59 36hp, 1960 36hp, and 61 and later 40hp? i have a pile of different dipticks that all seem to fit, but they are 4 different lengths and marks are all in different spots

I love how this thread helped me to understand the reason for the 40mm dipstick full mark for 1960. Did it return to 44mm in 61? or was it just no longer painted red?

1961 is the 1. year with the 40 HP engine case (no longer 36HP case). The 40 HP engine case use a shorter oil dip stick, so they are not directly comparable to the earlier 36 HP ones.

The red colored dip sticks must have been introduced only on 36 HP engines in 1960 model cars, simply to indicate the lowered oil level markings (since the 1960 dip stick has the same length as on earlier 36 HP engines).
