Anybody out there have new or used shift linkage bushings for an air cooled - 80 to 83.5 Vanagon? I had great luck with Van Again (856) 327-4936 for most of the parts including bushings but I still need:

1. Center Shift Bushing #251711207

2. Front Shift Rod/bottom ball bushing

These are apparently "NLA"

For the center rod bushing, I've read some interesting options for 2 above, like using pieces from a Golf bushing kit, using a PVC pipe, plastic hose of JB welding a new tab and custom fitting an available VW bushing on to the tab.

Thanks,

mi

Mark,

We are already in the process of trying to get the bushings. I can see if one more can be added but I am making no promises. We are just getting the center shift bushing. The other two , we are still trying to work out a solution. We may have something for the bottom ball bushing since that is basically a nylon sleeve. But the top ball bushing is going to be tougher to figure out. I got one of the Golf shifter kits and though it is close it is not going to work.

Hi Guys,
I am new to the forum, but would be interested in these vanagon shifter bushings also. The one above the tank I am going to try to make from delrin, but the ball bushing that connects the 2 shift rods cannot be made in my estimation. I would love to be included if anyone can find these.

Hi,
I am new to the list. I am retired from VW and have a 1980 vanagon. I have made my own bushings for these models. I can repair your linkage but need to have the car here to check it at my house. I will do these repairs to nicely maintained vanagons, not junk, but will not sell kits as these bushings need to be "hand fitted".
Please contact me privately.

One of the members of this fourm sells some shift linkage bushings. You might want to contact him-link below. My local mechanic uses Porche bushings and alters them to fit.

Anyone find the bushings for an 80-83.5? All the white ones shown are for post 83 vans. I've got a UHMW blank to machine one but would like to replace with the rubber rather then a hard plastic.

Non of those listed will work.

Which bushings are you looking for (Use the letters in the image)?

WAgrower Mon Sep 12, 2011 12:41 pm

I'm looking for "J" and would imagine that's what others are looking for. It's a urethane bushing that lives right above the fuel tank.

I'm in the process of machining one from UHMW bar stock (and by process I mean trying to find the time..)

It drives ok without it, just sounds like hell with the metal on metal vibration and dragging sound. Also makes it hard to find 1st and 3rd...

I'll take pics so if it works out well I can post a how-to.

What is the diameter of the rod that goes through bushing J?

reluctantartist Mon Sep 12, 2011 7:31 pm

I'll try and post the measurements of the actual bushing, yes I have a NOS one and the substitue from germany...the wbxr bushings are different and are installed differently.

Here is a drawing of the bushing:

Here is what it looks like NOS:

I have an extra NSU bushing that we group ordered for replacement bushings. One of the guys never responded when they came in. PM me if you want it.

I saw several PVC grommets that looked a lot like that at a FLAPS recently.

Or you could make something out of irrigation pipe too, I think.

Just an idea.

There has been a post on the samba http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=385306&start=60
that I dug for a french member a couple months ago,the part is still available from a NSU.

http://www.nsu-autoteile.de/advanced_search_result...=0&y=0 the clear one.

Just make a group buy  That's what we did in France.

Bye!

Hello,
I am new here to posting.. i read around sometimes, but now I am in need of some HELP. I have a 1982 Westfalia sitting in the driveway in need of some shift rod bushings... I think i have figured out all the ones that I will need. And the main one seems to be NLA. You have posted here about the Center Shift Rod bushing being avail. somewhere in germany... but I dont have that tyoe of $$. Any new information on where I can find this bushing without giving an arm and a leg?

Thanks for the help in advance. i know I will have plenty more questions/concerns as I am super new to this. I am hoping to eventually work on her myself, but with the shift rod thing, i am not yet comfortable getting underneath the vehicle.. because what if i have jacked it up incorrectly? you catch my drift. anyway, lots of help will be needed with the frigde/stove/propane/etc parts of my lovely dented slice of heaven.

I need to get on the road with her!! I cant wait any longer.
thanks,
dawna

The below URL from above points to the part in question and it is only like Euro 8.

Even with shipping that seems cheap to me.

Seems cheap to me, also. I thought i read somewhere that it was way more than that, thats why they were doing a group buy. Anyway, the link mentions that it's "the clear one".. yet I only see a grey and and a yellow/orange.

Thanks for the help
