"Sportmatic" in '67? You shift it, but the clutch is automatic... |

In 1972, Porsche introduced the "sportmatic" transmission, which was a conventional four speed manual transaxle with vacuum actuator for the clutch. It also had a torque converter on the engine side of the clutch. Placing your hand on top of the gear lever sucked in the clutch.

That clutch sucked alright.smile I had the same thing in a 1968 Volkswagon. VW called theirs the "Automatic Stick Shift" (A.S.S. believe it or not smile)
so are we just talking about the Auto stick ???
928 had an auto (1st maybe)
but thats a whole different set up ...
hm?.... |

from the interwebs:
"The Sportmatic Semi Automatic
In 1967, Porsche astonished the world by offering a semi-auto "Sportmatic" transmission, in which there was a torque converter and a clutch, but clutch control was by a micro-switch in the gear lever, which still had to be used to change ratios.
In 1968 the new "B" series cars had their wheelbase extended by two inches..."
Basically, you just touch the gear shift, and it activates the clutch. If you're the type to rest your hand on the lever knob, you won't move, heh.
Didn't the Type3 VW have a fully auto tranny?
Vanagon tranny would probably work... ?
I think a 928 might be overkill. |

Try "Sportomatic". Introduced in 1968. Using a vacuum control unit, a microswitch on the base of the shift lever activated the clutch. You can shift as a manual or put it in D2 and tool around town without shifting. This was available up until the '80's I think I've seen, but not entirely a popular option. |

The "Sportmatic" arrived with the '67's. The VW "Autostick" is a different transmission all together.
Why not use a Type 3 unit? Vanagon? Subaru?
"Oh well" is unacceptable!!!
Good luck with it, whatever you use. |

id like to see a write up on the "sportmatic" and the "Autostick"
for a good comparison |

You lost me. At first I thought you wanted to convert TO an automatic. Then, I understood you already have an automatic. Uhmmm... ok. No comments on the bus/vanagon/subaru boxes either.
SO-- you should totally use the 928 GTS tranny. It makes the most sense for your VW.

I briefly checked out your link. I've seen "Europe in '67, America in '68" online as well. I saw more than 1 '67 911 sportomatic for sale when I was trolling for my 67 912, and a neighbor swears he bought a '67 911S sportomatic brand new though... he's got a 356 now, and has been into Porsche's his whole life.
?
Either way though-- I'm not too interested in them. |

ok
before vws i drove Jeeps
and before that
late 40s early 50s cars (Fluid Driven Transmission)
it had a clutch but that was really just to put it into first
it had an H on the colomn
P-up
R-down
1/2-Up Forward
2/3- Down Forward
so you can take off in 1 or 2 in either posission
without the use of the clutch
you could also let it automatically shift
OR use the RPMs or clutch to shift between the 1/2 and the 2/3
I LOVED THOSE CARS
i had a 49' chrys, 51'plymth, and 52' dodge
both my cars (T3/4) have a fully auto and they both work fine
Looking into Upgrading my 411s Transmission
but Not with a Standard 4/5 speed
now that you linked the Sportomatic
Its Perfect
but seemingly not that easy to get altho there were 8000 produced over the years
i would LOVE to get my hands on a set from a mid 70's porsche (engine/tranny)
altho the 411 is VW i believe its set up for a Good Porsche Upgrade
as the 914 is to the 6 cylinder |
