Hi guys, sorry if Im repeating myself, I dont know how to delete the other thread sorry about that. When Im in high speed at the 4th gear, the car is rolling good. Its fluid. But I notice when Im starting at the first or when I change from the first to the second, its just bump, or even when Im changing the second to the third (but its less) Just like when you put a gear and you dont put press the gas enough. But I mean even If I press the gas, its still bumping. It does that when I decrease gear too. What can it be, obviously its releated to the transmission or the clutch. What you guys think? |

If it's more of a "wheel hop" than a "bump" it could be the bowden tube for the clutch cable.
Picture below is a bowden tube on an older bug. Safari setup is similar. Note the number of washers on the rear end of the tube. They are placed there to give the tube the proper bend.
A "bump" when accelerating or decelerating could be a forward transmission mount. |

Hi Semper, what is the job of this tube? Ad why its need to be properly bend? Yes its kind of a wheel hop. Heheh. |

If you have a gear reduction box transaxle in your Type 181 which came in them in Mexico.
The axles turn in reverse direction out to the reduction boxes.
This cause the rear to rise when stepping on the gas instead of squating like a standard bug type transaxle.
1967 and earlier VW Buses do the same thing because of the reduction boxes.
It is referred to as hopping when the rear end rises. Noise could be spring plates hitting lower stops. |

X2. Samy, I think you might have nothing wrong. Just the typical (and normal) hopping described by turtlebuggy. I had 3 181s in the past with swingaxle and RGBs and they were all doing this. Every single one does. The 1973-on with IRS and no RGBs don't do that.
Now if there's a "move" you can feel in the shifter, when releasing the gas pedal (in full accelaration in 3rd for example), this could be the tranny mount like sixty9fasty said. They break frequently on 181s with RGBs, because of that specific hopping. You absolutely need to check that. That's a simple visual inspection under the car. Crawl under there and check the nose trans mounts (between nose of trans and chassis). See if there's some cracks in the rubber, or if the rubber is separated from the metal part of the mount. Put a huge screwdriver or a flat bar between chassis and mount and make it move (gently) to see any failure.
That's the part we're talking about :
