I finally got my little Class 11 style car back from Bugzylla a few days ago. I had a tight budget and ended up meeting the budget! Now if only our free spending government can...
The pan is a 68 that has been converted to IRS. The engine that fit my budget and future gas budget ended up being a 1200 cc that was rebuilt by Bugzylla with a 1600 cam and a big bore kit making it a 1385cc. The carb is a rebuilt 30pict1. Since the engine would be around 50 hp, I asked Don's Bus Box to build a 4.37 geared IRS type 1 transaxle. It should turn the tires fine. The bug was completely rewired and a custom 3" body lift was installed. The body is a 76, but the rear fenders are pre 73.
From this:
To this so far:
Seats are from a Chevy Cavalier and have been lifted 5". According to Daryll, this made the seat about 2" above a normal VW seat. The combination of the 3" Bugzylla custom body lift and the lifted Cavalier seats gave me a bunch of leg room. I'm 6'1" and have long legs. I had to scoot my seat FORWARD to engage the clutch!
The little 1385cc engine combined with the 4.37 IRS transaxle work great with the freshly powdercoated sport wheels holding the General Grabber AT2 225/70r15 tires. The sunroof will probably get welded shut and the body work will be coming soon. It needs rebuilt and I don't know that I want to have future leaks. I haven't made up my mind yet.
It will be getting painted with U-POL Raptor UV protected tintable bedliner, inside and out. I think I will go for an olive drab or agave green.
So far, I had to track down fuel smell that was strong. I am keeping my eye on a few other little items as well. I am pleased. Need to get some heat for it! These mornings are getting chilly! |

Since my last post, "Hans the stinkbug" as my kids know it, has a new ring job, new valve job, passed emissions, re-timed, sunroof tubes repaired, doors adjusted, and dash pad removed.
I picked up new glass rubber, a degree pulley, quickshift kit, fender welting and................................ today I bought the UPOL Raptor tintable bedliner kit! I tried to get L319, which is the olive color VW used on their military cars in the 60-70's, but ADCO couldn't find it. They even called someone and couldn't cross reference it. No biggie, I just had them mix up some regular olive drab as tint. I also had a can of spray paint in the same color made so I can paint my hinges and hood springs.
I hope to prep the car this week, and shoot it this weekend!
Oh ya, my old license plate finally came in the mail. Hans is sporting the plate 8NOHIPI. |

HAhahaha, i dig the plate!
But why a such a small motor? Are you just trying to cruiz with nothing special?
Looking forwards to pics with it painted.
Oh yeah, one more question. You had to smog it? |

I used the UPOL Raptor tintable UV protected bedliner kit with olive drab tint. I only had one kit (1 gal) and found that I need to buy a second kit for better coverage. I was able to coat the exterior with one heavy coat and one light coat. The same with the dash, interior doors and jambs/pillars. The second kit I want to buy will allow me to put another heavy coat on the exterior and to coat the trunk and engine compartment. I am pleased so far. Here is a quick picture:

A few more. The dark spots on the doors are from when I tried to cover some of the thin spots with a spray can I had made up with the same paint material that was used for the tint. It will be covered with the next round of bedliner.

That car is cool.
I saw it in the lot at Volkstreffen 1 in Glendale. Looks cool. Love the green.
I'd throw some nerf bars on the side, or some combat running boards, and call it 'done'. |

I found a rear seat and installed it with seat belts for my 3 kids. I am looking into having the rear torsions re-indexed and the front cut and turned. That should give it plenty of lift.
I've been tinkering with the jetting, and think I finally got it to work without pinging. I'll need to pick up another bedliner kit and spray it again before it gets too hot out in the valley. Fun bug. |

I picked up a new German original style exhaust this weekend at the Bugarama and installed it. It is much higher. I picked up adjusters and the front and rear are going up some more! I hope to have it lifted soon and then put another coat of bedliner on it by the end of April, |

you gonna switch out the autostick tranny?
if not, it'd be cool to see how they go with mild offroad provided you have an ATF cooler. ive offroaded my autostick and it was great but after the strength issues people told be about i ditched it. |
