I have now received two of the three manuals but I still need a manaul covering the engine and gearbox

HUGO bOSS Wed May 22, 2013 2:40 pm

I have some original of them in papper:

TDv 2310/001-12 "Teil 1 Beschreibung; Teil 2 Bedienung und Pflege" - "Part 1 Description; Part 2 Operation and Maintenance"

TDv 2310/001-22 "Teil 22 Fristenheft" - "Part 22 Deadline Issue" - Maintenence records, with dates, kms, oils changes, etc.

TDv 2310/001-30 "Teil 3 Wartung uns Truppeninstandsetzung" - "Part 5 Maintenance repair our troops" - With the instructions for engine and all the mechanics, 195 pages, plus 3 for notes and a big one with the electrical system.

TDv 2310/001-31 "Teil 31 - Arbeitspositionen, Materialerhaltungsstufen, Richtzeiten" - "Part 31 Working positions, material maintenance steps, recommended times" - No pics, just words.

TDv 2310/001-50 "Teil 5 Ersatzteilliste" - "Part 5 Replacemte List" - The one with the VW references - 85 pages

TDv 2310/001-80 "Teil 8 Prüfanweisung" - "Part 8 Test Instructions" Just words... 56 pages

If I could get a copy of all these in .pdf or even paper, I could do them.

I know you used the computer to translate some of these and in general it is pretty close, but when you typed #3 you mis-typed uns for und which is why your tranlsation says " us " instead of "and"

But then, I don't speak Portuguese. Touche!

These manuals are a great start but nowhere have I seen a manual on the engine, and how to rebuild, just maintenance.

I can't believe there is no manual, what army would buy a vehicle without an engine rebuild manual?

Usually just the opposite is true when a govt buys a vehicle.

HUGO bOSS Sat May 25, 2013 5:33 pm

 Well, you have right... The TDV 30 manual is only for maintenance... and even the auto destruction...
How to rebuilt an engine maybe should be na Haynes manual that they have in the workshop...

This is true.

My question: Did the German Army use a civilian manual to repair the engine of their Typ 181?? Shocking!

BUMP cuz I'm still looking.

Translating 100+ page books is a lot of work, so I want to do the most needed first.

Opinions?

doesnt surprise me that they used the civilian one..when i wa sin the army, not every unit had hmmwv's, some still had the chevy/gmc 5/4 ton pickups and blazers, and IIRC, they just had the GM manuals for the non-military specific stuff.

Thanks to kubelmann and a 10.00 bill, I have received the copy of a CD containing multiple TDv's aka Technische Datenvorschrifte or Tech Data instructions (manuals).

I am going to start them in earnest and do the translation in a way that not everyone may like:

On pages where there are few words, I'm going to write the English right next to the German.

In the case of an entire page, I will put together a typed page duplicating the paragraphs on the full page in German.

Then I will scan all of this and send it on a CD to Everett, for use in the Archive. It will be FREE for the use of anyone who wants it.

Unless someone has violent objections, that will enable me to do some fast work. I will not release any manual in parts, but keep it all together.

I hope to start on this very soon, after I print a copy of the whole document and start my annotations.

More news as it occurs.

After having persued these books, I have decided to make a bilingual annotated edition of the TDV or technische daten vorschrift/ tech data instructions.

On some pages, I could just print the translation, there's so much space!
In other cases, I would add the translation on a separate sheet. Then when I make the .pdf, the whole thing is together and you get both versions. This may not be the prettiest, but it solves two problems:

1. No scumbag will take a copy and try to sell it.

2. If you don't like my translation, you can add your own.

Voila.

I look forward to the use of the data from your finished product.

I know how you feel. I have a 74 Thing resto going that has a plugged fuel line. I have been trying to find my old speedo cable/fuel line reamer. So I work on other stuff as I continue to seek out the "tool" I too am ready to get on to other stuff.

el_safari Thu Aug 29, 2013 1:58 pm

Back in the 70' , in Germany I always saw kübels , käfer and busses by my local vw garage for the maintenance . That why they didn't have repair manual for engine and gearbox ... 8)

el_safari Fri Aug 30, 2013 7:08 am

Of course MILITARY 181, käfer and bus ...

HUGO bOSS Sun Mar 22, 2015 1:34 pm

Any news about the translation?

germanbilly Sun Mar 22, 2015 1:47 pm

When I left Bitburg AB in germany in July 1983 all of our german vehicles went downtown to the dealers. All we were allowed to do was change light bulbs. My commander asked me one day about his VW single cab that was making a little valve noise. I adjusted the valves and that was that. Problem was fixed. Was not supposed to do it but he would have lost it for a couple of days.
