After months of heated negotiations I finally get this 54 for my very own. The previous owner let it go for 5k! He had over 30 k in the restoration. I actually posted this car months ago while doing my research. Thanks to all of you who helped me through the process! Your knowledge is awesome! Check it out. I will post more pics as I go through it.

The front end looks nice and straight. It has zero damage inside the hood. The apron appears to be original. I know that the head lights are not correct.

A little misalignment on the door. Both front fenders have the metal tube from the bucket to the body.

The rear has the H pattern apron. No damage. Latch works great. The tail lights are wrong I think. The running lights are the hearts and the brake lights are the lower lights. Window rubber looks fresh with no cracks.

The body has no dents or dings. The paint is gorgeous. I'll bet after a good detailing it will really look good. Wheel color is a nice combo. Have no idea if it is correct.

The interior appears to be a good job. The red is not stock for a black car according to many of the Samba members. Who cares I love it!

All of the pans look like this. Under each mat. No rust. Under the car looks like this too. the pan is original. No welding or tampering of any kind.

The dash it tight. There is a mystery hole to the left of the head light switch. The choke pulls out and in very smoothly. The ignition switch is a match with the door handle using the same Key. I have a call into Gabriel for some spare Huf keys.

Both semephores work well. The left one is a bit limp when other electrical is on. The lenses are both very nice.

I have no idea who did the interior but I think the work looks good. All of the door handles and workings are nice and smooth and operate nicely.

All and all I think I have a great bargain here. I have not figured out if it is all original or not. It has the proper chassis numbers and body numbers to place it in 1954. All of the glass except the windscreen is OG. The fenders feel very thick and sturdy. Underneath there is no body work visible. More to come as I learn about it. I can't wait to share with you.
Enjoy!

Wow, 5k that is an awesome deal! Car looks beautiful and congrats on a great score!

Got anymore pics of the engine area?

Holy crap, that is a hell of a lot of oval for $5k. Did you check under the hood for a body or something undesirable?

Nice oval, red interior in a black car ALWAYS works....

nice car for only 5K ..did the guy owe his bookie a chunk of change and needed $ in a BIG hurry?

nealglobalauto Sat Feb 05, 2011 10:36 pm

beautiful car congrats!

What a score! For that kind of price you normally get a project, not a nicely finished and complete car. Love the early ovals!

Just one little nit-pick if I may... the tail lights seem to be too high. This also normally means non-original rear fenders.

That oval is beautiful.

Once in a lifetime score.....congrats

You stole that thing at $5000. Congrats, very nice oval.

Thanks for the high fives! I will get some pics of the engine compartment. I do know that the serial number on the case is for a 58. It probably blew up years ago and this is what went in. Agree on the tail light height. They look several inches too high to me as well. One of the issues is it has a black plug on number 1 cylinder. After I do a full tune and valve adjustment I will get a compression test going. Could be a bad plug wire too.

Very nice car and cheap.....

You wright that you think that the taillights ar wrong!
But the taillights are right for a -54 but they are located wrong.... they should be much lower on the fender.....
You can search this forum and see were they should be....

Once again..... very nice car..

Looks like the wrong year. Some right stuff on it though. Runs okay. I'll tune it this weekend.

Frame number says September or October 1954.

Steering box # It is dropping a little oil. Never worked on on of these.

Both numbers on the transmission. Any body know if these are correct for 54?

Cylinder head #s. Both heads look clean.

Front and back brakes looked pretty clean. Check out the oil slinger. Most of the gold stuff has the VW logo on it.

Safety wiring? Is that stock?

More to come. Thanks for the interest! I found some goodies under the passenger seat today. I'll post em tomorrow.
