I am looking at all the different options. Just wanted to know if I wanted 150 hp and 280 of torque. What engine would you guys go with? I want to be able to haul a few ATV's. Sorry if this is a dumb question but I am still learning! |

Just about any VW tdi can be coaxed into producing those figures with some massaging. What's your budget? |

That would be sweet but probably out of the price range? Although I have been looking at the Pd that has the 150 hp for 10G. |

My thought was to spend around 3-5k for a motor but its the rest that is going to cost so much. They do not have any of the higher output TDI engines in the US? |

All the VW tdis can easily be modified to produce ungodly amounts of hp and torque, if you've got the budget for the enhancements, so you just need to settle on the best platform from which to base your conversion and go from there. |

Talk to Karl Mullendore at Westy Ventures. He does Tdi conversions and can tell you all you want to know.

The ALH TDIs (99.5-2003) have the largest aftermarket and are the easiest to get big power out of, but they take a fair bit more work to install than the older AHU TDIs.
If you plan on towing 2 atv's at highway speed you will need to spend some money to keep the TDI happy. Good intercooling, and additional oil cooling are needed for such an application IMO. I'd install a EGT (Exhaust Gas Temperature) gauge as well. |

Yes please do! What could be taken from that statement is not something that should be worded in a confusing way. |

I think Alaric is trying to say that Karl is booked up until forever (book into the afterlife). I gave Karl as a reference since the OP could talk to Karl and get a knowledgable opinion/answer to his questions. Not expecting Karl to be able to work on the conversion anytime soon even if the OP wanted him to. :D |

What about the 1Z motors? Are they a big pain in the booootocks because of the computer control? I have heard that a lot of people use the AAZ diesel. I'm still trying to think of a way to stick a 3-71 van. Talk about torque and noise and smoke!!! Sweet.
Yep. Totally sweet. |

2 stroke DD's only do one thing well, turn diesel fuel into noise!!
Now find a way to use a series 60 & well be onto something!
Indirect injection (IDI) AAZ will not easily get you to your power goal. 1Z/AHU are eTDI & can mount using stock vanagon diesel 50 degree mounting bits or overland conversion parts for 15 degree install. etdi ALH is indeed a stouter motor & can go 50deg with some work but is easier at 15. All vw tdi's can accept mtdi pumps, Libbybapa has a 12mm cummins 4bt bolt on pump for sale right now for a fantastic price, highly recommended.
The 15 degree overland kits sold by many are pretty complete & use hydro mounts which is gooder than the stock VW diesel setup IMHO. 50 degree has better ground clearance than the WBX tho. |

I wish that one could squeeze a Series 60 in there! Jesu Christo!! Is that a DDEC IV correct? Imagine..... There was a 3-54T also. That might be a little easier to put in although I have the 3-71 already up at the farm. |

I think the question is whether you want it to be reliable (i.e. last more than 25K miles) long term with that much power and torque.
I'm one of the few putting this through my Syncro daily and it's hard on the gearbox.
If I wanted to do this kind of conversion again, I'd want to start off with the latest V6 3.0 TDi from VW/Audi, or the equivalent from other manufacturers. That way you start with that much (or more) power and torque without having to tune it and in the process, lose some of the ecomony, reliability and refinement which the manufacturers have spent tens of thousands on getting as good as possible.
I've tuned Limey up but only because 115bhp and 200ftlbs wasn't enough to drive around daily in a 4850 lbs Syncro. In the process I've lost some of the ecomony. I'm looking at ways now to get that back
I can't see a 1Z of AFN living to very long with 150bhp and 280ftlbs. The PD's do seem better but they wear injector cams on the higher hp engines. There is a fix for this which I would do if I was going to run one. The 150bhp PD TDi only produces 235ftlbs so you'd need to tweak it to get more.
