Srry for starting a new thread for this but i couldn't find what I needed in search.
I installed clk rims over the weekend and noticed when I installed the rear rims there were two little bolts on the rear drums that kept the rims from setting propery on the drum and would make the wheel wobble. I removed the little bolts and everything seems fine now but I am concerned that those bolts are actually needed for something :D
Are they? |

From the vancafe website:
Quote: PLEASE NOTE: Whenever installing any 15" rims you must remove the two small set bolts that hold the drum to the rear hub while the wheel is off, otherwise they prevent the rim from sitting flush. |

They are there to keep the drum on when the wheel is taken off |

My understanding is that they are optional even with stock wheels. They kept the drum from falling off at the factory on the assembly line. Use them if you want to. If you don't, watch your toes when you take off your rear wheels. |

Rust will hold the drum onto the hub quite nicely without the bolt. |

Holy shit! You actually took out the bolts? You're in deep doo-doo my friend! Those are the bolts that keep people guessing what the bolts actually do!? A rift in the time/space continuum is soon to follow! |

I just got a set of VanCafe 16" Euros that I installed tonight. Although their website says you have to remove the set screws my wheels didn't touch them at all. And of course, the van is lookin pretty. |

Old time wisdom is that back in the day of drum brakes, if your wheel should fall off while underway (Not unheard of) you want to STOP immediately!
But........
If the brake drum also falls off, when you step on the brake pedal the wheel cylinder pistons will pop out of the cylinder releasing all the brake fluid and rendering the axle's brake system completely inoperative.
With modern dual zone braking, you still have the other axle to slow you down (though less quickly). Back in the day of single zone brakes, this sudden loss of fluid rendered ALL of your brakes inoperative.
It was in the interest of safety that drums were fastened to the hub. A practice continued by most manufacturers until the recent demise of drum brakes.
