Having a blast doing a 1957 Panel project!
The purchase:
I was away on a business trip and decided to make some offers. Eventually narrowed it down to a ’57 panel and negotiated terms and price while navigating airport security. Quick call to ask my wife to get some cash from the bank, scurry to reserve a uhaul trailor for next morning only seconds before flight attendent made me shut off phone. Land, receive confirmation and address from seller.
The Pickup:
Wake early, pick up friend, load trailer, drive 5 hours, load bus, quick Subway footlong, 5 hours back to Miami, drop off bus at painters and dash to Uhaul to make it back by 8:00pm. Arrive at Uhaul at 7:57pm and they were not happy to see me (it was a Friday night and now they have to stay a few minutes late). Then when they see the pickup full of bus parts they really got pissed...ha!
Stuffed bags, boxes, tubs of parts. bumpers, gas tanks (there were two in the cargo area), glass, panels, lights, radio, electronics, tools into the back of my blazer. Strapped giant bulkhead panel to roof. Crawled into blazer while my friend held down the panel and drove 15mph to drop off motor.
Returned home 11pm covered in grease with a smile on my face.
Status 3/4/2011:
Just about all parts purchased: metal, wheels, safaris, wiring harness, odds/ends. Motor rebuild underway, paint underway. Now reconditioning what I can salvage and hoping to be on the road in May.
Big thanks to all the guys helping and teaching me as we go...Loving it!

Took a break today and spent the day in Everglades National Park with baby/wife/brothers.
Back to cleaning parts tomorrow. |

I love the simplicity of the design. There are so few parts, you can fit them all into the back of a Chevy blazer, including the motor. (I know from experience)

The panel is SOLID AS HELLLL. cant wait to see it running!!. Tom before you know it you will be rolling it to Fuds with a slammed panel and a 2 liter. :D |

I forgot about that door, luckily it is safe and sound in Miami now!
Maybe I can put the engine on a boat, it's spent more time underwater than above! At leat it would be a good anchor.
I can't believe we made it back to Uhaul on time....crazy day.

Wow, good score.
You just don't see many Panels that straight these days.
And as a mate of mine says, Panels are the hotrods of the VW world. 8) |

Just got the Wolfsburg West box....mostly rubber/seals/hardware...big stuff on the way from all the classifieds sellers.
Will order exhaust tomorrow after final plan for motor is decided. Most likely settle on 2 liter...Unless I really want to impress Andy's mate and go bigger to make a real hot rod!
My security desk is going to hate me for the next week...package from UPS at the gate...ha! |

Cleaned out window frames today. Removed 55 year old rubber, not easy but not nearly as hard as putting in new will be.

You got me thinking...I sold the Westy from my avatar pic in 1993. The guy still owns it and it still has the sticker I put on the rear window back in 1987. Couldn't believe it! |

I love the fact that you and your bus took over the living room and looks like a lot of other rooms.
My wife feels the same way - I have taken over pretty much the whole house... :lol:
