ok so i decided to use that little purple sprayer from harbor freight thnks to the comments i got here but now i have another quandry

every body said that dupli color they sell in every auto store is crud

ao what about that summit racing brand paint i never bought paint oustside a rattle can before and learned how to get pretty good results from that but i want to take a step up

so is that summit stuff expensive or not is it a good value how easy is it to spray

also still looking into oppinions on the dupli color

Havent used either... and as an amateur I offer my 2 cents.

The duplicolor is a premixed paint, so its already reduced. It also means that the primer and clear coat arent catylized, which means the paint will likely not be very durable, may chip, discolor, or simply wipe away if say you spilled the wrong chemical on your car, say brake cleaner. I havent personally used it, but its suppose to be the same paint that is in there rattle cans, and those certainly have durabuility issues.

For the cost I would consider the summit brand system, its cheap, looks like it would hold up better then the duplicolor, and would only cost you a minimal amount more, possibly less depending on how the base and clear get reduced.

Good luck, and post some pics of your progress.

Edit: I just read your other thread, and there was tons of good advise, heck even buying single stage omni paint on ebay http://motors.shop.ebay.com/wbmesq/m.html?_trksid=p4340.l2562 that is dirt cheap, and would be plenty durable. Also waaaaaay cheaper then the duplicolor or the summit stuff. Make sure you get the correct reducers/ hardners/ etc. Spec sheets can be found online. Also did you ever contact a local paint shop to see what they have available.

The attige is; "You get what you pay for."....I would stay away from the dupli color......the summit brand i believe would be a better option....its still economy paint......but i am sure its better than the dupli color.

you already seem bent on using dupli color and are only hunting that one opinion that agrees with you.
there is quite a few places to get auto paint thats better then the dupli crud you are wanting to use

I have said it before...I like Kirker. Easy to spray, does not have to be reduced (just an activator) and yo can go single stage or clear it. At about $75 a sprayable gallon its tough to beat.

Nason single stage! :) It's inexpensive, and it's pretty tough stuff.

TonysGarage Sat Mar 19, 2011 4:25 pm

nason single stage sounds like a fair option---but i dont remember it being THAT cheap. last time i used it (about a year ago) it cost about $250 for a gallon of color, catalyst, and reducer.....but then again i have no idea what that summit racing line goes for and nason will outperform it for sure.

the Summit paint IS Kirker. i know this to be 100% true as i was told so by the sales guy at smartshoppers( www.smartshopperinc.com ) and then confirmed it with Kirker directly.

i like Nason single stage. i also haven't bought any in a while AND my good source closed down recently. i've gotta price some soon though. last time i did buy some it was right around $170 a gallon i think.

the tcpglobal Restoration Shop(think thats what it's called), not the Kustom Shop, is supposedly as good or better than the Nason(all the tcp paint is rumored to be dupont based now). i priced a gallon of their ss urethane and the gallon, and all the stuff to go with it was like $160. and they have the vw color charts which is where dealing with my local nason source may not be fun.

that duplicolor is GARBAGE. you'd be better off spray bombing it. and i'm NOT kidding...ken....

Just commenting on TCPGlobal.

I spoke with their head of R&D directly last week for about an hour and discussed their paints, and kustom shop clears and colors. He said that the kustom shop line is directly mimicked off of HOK. Except he made all his colors brighter.
And he mimicked the restoration shop line after PPG-not Dupont. He explained how he doesn't like dupont and since they used to be such a large supplier of PPG and still do supply it to many many shops they have been doing tests/spray outs/ etc and HE claims you can get the same appearance and similar durability as PPG.

Although--if you're picking a classic color--it's going to be different than what you see online, and it's not like at your local jobber--where he mixes it and if you dont like it he'll sit there and tweak it till you do.

both interesting and weird. i thought the Kustom Shop stuff was based off similar chemistry to PPG. and the Resto Shop was Dupont. good to know. i haven't looked recently but when you choose their lines you could go and look at what it's comparable to and i know when i looked they resto shop urethane ss was compared to a dupont line. can't remember which right not but that was their comparison.

also of note when i spoke to the guys at smartshoppers recently the guy told me Kirker has a DTM 2k primer about to hit the market that is pretty much modeled after HOK kd2000. he told me that as i was calling for some valspar dtm2000 which is the EXACT same primer as kd2000 for about half the price. they pulled the valspar for now because valspar pulled their great price to them and the savings wasn't even close afterwards and sales dropped. they want it back though.

i'm trying to find out who is making the Master Series primers for O'reilly's. i've had a couple people tell me they've been using the 2k and it's as good or better than nason and the MS is like $75 a gallon...ken....

Not hell bent at all i was just wondering if some one had used a teqnique and got good results so its out of the question

and i read the replys from the last post and got a lot of good advice

ok so summit is the same as the kirker brand is it cheaper to get it from summit or order it directly also im painting my 74 white with black scalops

and would a gallon do the whole car or would i need more

Matt K. Wed Mar 23, 2011 7:17 am

That depends...if it is single stage is it a true gallon of color or i have seen some that sell a 3/4 gallon of color then when you add the hardner it makes a gallon.......still if you are doing inside and out it may not be enough......it depends on coverage.

Your posts are too hard to understand, since you don't use ANY punctuation/capital letters/paragraphs etc.
