Remember that cool helicopter on that tv show Airwolf? Remember that whistling sound that was blended into the the standard helicopter sound? I had a buddy who was a sound board operator at a recording studio. He took that sound apart and said it was combination of normal helicopter, some synthetic sounds and three different tones of whistles. The whistles give it that animal scream sound. I want to duplicate the whistle sounds.
My Rat Rod Trail Rail is powered by an old school Ford V6. I modified the engine and I might be bragging a tiny bit when I say it's impressive looking. It kind of leaps out at you because it's bright red and flashy looking but the rest of the car is camouflage. The Holley Flat Tracker carb sits up high on a five inch riser (Free low range horsepower!) and is topped off by a functional but fake Hillborn compressor type air cleaner.
Exhaust is thru headers and out thru turbo type mufflers. At an idle, it's just a burble with a little bit of rumble but it gets progressively louder as the engine speeds up. At higher rpm's, it sounds like a PO'd animal. That got me to thinking.
Back when I was building this engine, I decided to use a double fan belt arrangement for the alternator, water pump and crank. (More reliability) I could not find a proper sized double crank shaft pulley anywhere on this planet so I modified the oem one by machining out a single pulley and bolting it up to the oem one. (Spun and balanced) That was a fairly substantial hunk of Aluminum and I should have cut some lightening holes in it but I was in a hurry to hear it run.
So here's my idea: I'm going to drill lightening holes in but at an angle and different sizes to give three whistle tones. I think it'll sound good in conjunction with the normal engine sound. I'll need to figure out the angles and re balance it afterwards but that's easy enough.

A link is all I can do right now. It's the shiny Aluminum pulley on the bottom.

Nah, wrong sound. I want that tri tone whistle, not a whir. |
