I think I have a dead temperature gauge. This is what I have done thus far to diagnose it. The gas gauge works properly. The instrument cluster looks like it has been in a war zone, but everything else works fine.
I replaced the voltage regulator, I have 10V at the sensor plug. The plug ground is good. If I jumper the connector the gauge does NOT move. Is the gauge dead, or is it the foil? If it's the gauge, I did search for a replacement gauge and came up -EMPTY. I would like to use the stock gauge so I can add the Go Westry over temp buzzzer.
Suggestions on how to repair or what's a good aftermarket solution?
Thanks for your help. |

I had a gauge problem about five years ago that drove me crazy for a while... In my case it was the fuel gauge.
I checked the wiring, several times, right to the instrument foil - all seemed normal, so, I replaced the sender, a big PITA.
Same issues were immediately present... Figured it was the gauge, but alas, the gauge was fine...
Turns out it was some small bit of corrosion at the brass screw / instrument foil interface. Our 40 year old vehicles know a thing or two about corrosion in unexpected places.
Unscrewing the terminal, a little Deoxit D25 and a delicate scrub of the contact surfaces and I have had no problems ever since.
Good luck
