| I'm interested in putting on a metal mount to hold my spare here, the john muir book said it would be helpful to avoid bumping into things, and it looks mean like a jeep! What is the best way to go about putting a mount on like this? got welding experience and can make anything to fit, I just dont want to put it on a part of the frame that cant take the weight w/o cosmetic damage. |

The brackets we used to install on the bay buses were screwed to the sheetmetal of the nose. To help support the weight of the rim and tire, we would install it so that the tire rested on the bumper. The downside was the first time someone backed into the bus in a parking space, the nose would be bent. I know you are asking about a Vanagon, but the fittment would be about the same. Don't know about the lug spacing. Here is someone near you selling the bus one. http://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=960407
I would not do it personally. If you could fabricate a heavy duty bumper you could incorporate a spare tire mount similar to what is done on the rear. |
