when I go to start when motor is cold it cranks up then dies. I can give it gas and keep it going but if i don't it will run rough then cut off.
The thermo time switch is good. the cold start valve doesn't leak. I don't have a fuel pressure gauge, so can't check the cold start valve right now. I sprayed starting fluid around the TB plenum and the hoses going into it. no change in rpm.

I drove the van around the neighborhood for about 5 min and it will now crank and run fine with no assistance.

Do ya'll think it's gonna be the cold start valve, or something else? Any ideas on what to check?

Go through the trouble shooting section in this:

http://www.thesamba.com/vw/archives/manuals/afc_fi_training_troubleshooting_manual.php

It cold be the cold start valve, auxillary air flow valve, the temp 2, etc... ANyway the FI pdf would be the best place to start.
