Guys....
I contacted the mechanic who did the work. He says the motor is in fact the original 2.0 fuel injected Volkswagon motor. Perhaps the owner is mistaken (?). It looks like I'm heading to Lousiana soon to look.

| Wow did this thread ever get off the rails. To the Audi/VW engine crowd: I have access to those as well all manner 1.8 turd-blow's, v8/v6t's and the iconic 5cyl turbo's. If I were to do any I would do a 5 cyl turbo stroked to 2.5 liter with a gt40 and go out trolling for 997 twinturbo's :). The basis for the thought of a Porsche conversion was that the cache of popping the engine cover to reveal a jewel of an engine from a 3.2-3.6 air cooled would be nice. And as for water cooled a 3.4 -3.6 996 motor would work great in a vanagon power wise 270/290 hp with a similar amount of torque. Would make for a fun shop parts hauler/ race support van. There is no bragging rights for dumping in a 1.8t yes I know they are cheap/easy to work on blah blah blah but in the end you just have a pedestrian vehicle with some decent power. I like the wide eyed, gaping mouth expression a Porsche engined t3 would bring. Yes there may be faster vans etc but again it's the cache of the Porsche name that is at least half of the appeal for me. Since I have access to either I choose the one that has some impact. |

FYI, that's 'cachet'. |

Any built pictures?

I doubt that is all wheel drive or a syncro, with a tank in the front.
There are many tuned vanagons in europe, lowering them and repowering is much more popular there.
Have a look on yuotube for the transporter treffen at hockenheim. Some Audi V8s, Claer porsche power, and stockers having fun. |

A damit! My bad! You are right its not all wheel drive. It has the complete Porsche Stability management (PSM or traction control). Info taken from this thread (Why you shouldn't race your VW T3): http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=376608&highlight=shouldnt+race

this thing is awesome looking:
This is what a friend of mine had to say about that maroon van about two years ago:
"The maroon Westy is owned by a friend of mine, i've been in it at 240 kmh on a German Autobahn!!! Funny you noticed how well it handles, the reason is he fitted the complete Porsche Stability management (PSM or traction control) This is basically variable braking and is quite amazing. 3 years ago at Hockenheim he let me drive in a carpark ( not on the open road, shame!!) this carpark was wet and with full steering to the right ad foot to the floor on throttle the bus just went round in pefect circles without losing grip. The engine is limited and the wheel spin is controlled by the PSM. he keeps this switched on at all times round the track,This is why he's a bit slower than the other but never loses grip!!"

And the swiss race taxi. It is a transporter chassis with Porsche power and a splittie body.
There is a Finnish version as well. Both have poster build photos on their websites/blogs. |

With Eric's permission, posted his message here from the vanagon postal flares thread, plus 2 pictures under his name... Tx Eric.

Tristar Eric wrote: This is Van belongs to Andreas, it's a Claer creation. The flares on this awesome Westfalia are of the Tristar variety. Claer massaged these to fit due to lowering the van and trimmed them to fit the side cladding. Look closely you can still see the lowered section of the flare in the corners of the arch.
Modified front luggage rack for better aerodynamics + Beautiful bodykit + Nice wheels = Gorgeous vanagon!!!
Crazy air scoop! That should help reduce some air intake noise by not running the air duck all the way up. Maybe I should put that in my TDI van?
