Hi,
My '49 Standard has been fitted with a KDF transmission. On one side is a capital letter H in a circle and below that the numbers 21.02. Below that is the VW in a cog logo and below that the number 13.
On the other side is a serial number stamped in vertically which has a star symbol preceding the number 2-043920. From this info can anybody date it please?

My guess is somewhere in 1944. It's from a Kubelwagen. Does it have reduction boxes?

Hi, no it doesn't have reduction boxes. I was wondering if maybe the gearbox was dealer fitted in the fifties after the original one failed or it was replaced during the car's restoration around ten years ago. Would VW have supplied war-time crash boxes for replacing faulty boxes on later civilian dealer supplied cars?

Hi Andy,

It's very unlikely that VW would have fitted the 'box at any point. Most likely that it was fitted at some other point in the car's life or possibly during the restoration as a 'generic' early crash 'box.

Reading ut pm here, I also have an std VW 1949, and that one also have thar old type of transmision(gearbox)with several KDF symbols on diff parts on it. I d always thought it was the orignal transmission??I also do remember same nr as on ur box 21.02,I ll check it out soon

It's a high Kubel gearbox serial number, I think Bruce is correct, 1944. Also I think (not sure) the 13 makes it late war (casting mold revision #?) The H refers to the company that cast it for VW. VW under Major Hirst recycled loads of wartime parts in the very early postwar period but not by 1949 although the cogged logo was still appearing on some new parts even then. I doubt VW would have used it as a replacement post Hirst as quality of some late wartime parts can be questionable due to shortages of correct metals and skilled labour.

My guess is that it was swapped by an independent mechanic. The VW factory wasn't the only place where you could get your car repaired.

I have checked my transmission now, on the right side(in driving dir.) it has this number: 21.013 and the number 14 a bith up to the right. On the left side the number is 21.02 3(? its diff to read this last nr.) The main numbering on the transmission(gearbox) is 117 188.

is it possible to date my gearbox?
cn't find it in known listing....

Number: -0303498- (taped near starter)

specific bearing housing without arms for shoks. (as pre49 split)
oil filling vertical....

Cables brakes.

I'd say -0303498 - is July '51.
