That has to be a 8-12" section. Why have we never seen this before?

syncrodoka Tue May 17, 2011 6:43 am

It was revealed at Syncro Fest last month by jack. The chop was in the center of the van because that is hardest to do(tiny windows are hard to see out of, something not desireable while wheeling).

is that a dry sump set up?

syncrodoka Tue May 17, 2011 6:45 am

yes, dry sumped TDI.

morymob Tue May 17, 2011 6:57 am

Did u mean 'sectioned', which is a double slice horizonally(any amt) and joining top and bottom back together as it seems to show. Channeling is cutting so the'frame'/floor sits higher up into body lowering overall body section. Used to be popular in older street rods but was a huge amt of work, too much for me.

Hundreds of hours must have been spent on this rig already.
I love it.

What???? the windows only go half way down...ah com'on.

Oops, yes I did. Post edited.

The staggering amount of work he has done is not mostly even shown in these photos. It also has a fully integrated roll cage, largely hidden between the skin and headliner level. To improve the front approach angle the steering shaft angles up through the floor below the pedals to a relocated steering box. Also the stock fuel tank is gone, replaced by a custom made one. Mind numbing to look at the skill involved and commitment of time. I did not have a camera when I looked it over. Jack stands head and shoulders above the rest.

It looks functional... but :-&

Purpose built for a rubicon trip. If there is a syncro westy that will make it, you are looking at it.

Few would even attempt these major mods. I don't know of anybody that would have something to show after the dust settles.

I really wish this guy was a Samba member so we could see all the build photos too. The amount of work that went into this is definitely impressive!

syncrodoka Tue May 17, 2011 7:47 am

He has been putting time into that project daily for a long time. He doesn't have time to post anything.

OK, I can see the need to chop up the front and rear overhangs, and the need for those huge wheel wells, but.........

The section just seemed to lower the roof. Aside from a lower center of gravity, was there any other reason to lose all that headroom?

Williamtaylor33 Tue May 17, 2011 8:35 am

I can't imagine the work that went into that one. That's just incredible.
Where's the skid plate?

That was my thought as well. I love what he has done on the mechanical side of things as well as the chopped westy top. However the reason that I have a vanagon and not a land cruiser is for the interior space which Jack has now lost. It's not quite the route that I would have gone.

But don't get me wrong. I really can appreciate the work that has gone into this van and I do think its pretty cool. It's probably the coolest unvanagon vanagon around. :D

I'd love to see it sitting on top of the other chopped vanagon.

I heard there is a section where overhead clearance is a issue along with the better COG.
I have never been, all of the nut jobs that I know that did go there now live out of state.

That's really impressive - its not just a lot of work, it takes a lot of skill to fabricate at that level - WOW! Huge ground clearance too and the bodywork's up where the Rubicon rocks mostly can't reach.

I hope we get to hear a report on how this Syncro does running the Rubicon. ;)

Oh.. Rocks will reach up there, too.

Some fairly tight saddles in and around there.. There's a reason its called a "jeep trail".

Either way..
Looks like he has the skills to straighten any damage that gets done.

Very interesting build and lots to gleen from.. Entry and exit angles.
The dry sump.. cool stuff.. very cool stuff.
