My newest project, an OG early Feb. 54' Oval Ragtop sporting most of its original black paint. I just finished registering this bad boy as a Cali resident since its last hide out was in Arizona. It was a deal that was struck behind closed doors far from the online community. I'm currently waiting on its birth certificate from Wolfsburg Museum, if anyone recognizes this ride or has any history on it please chime in! Thanks for looking... :D

So today I started to split the body from the pan so I can start fresh from the pan up, a few buddys have already mentioned maybe perhaps I should redo the pan and drive-train as I have originaly planned than just reinstall the body using new seals/rubber and drive her as she is. My original angle was to do a full resto, whats everyones take on this???? Suggestions and opinions would be awesome! |

I think drive them like you found them is the way to go. |

First and foremost.. Thats a bad ass ride.. Definitely take care of that pan.. Might be a little minute... depends on what you want brotha.. If you want to roll it as a Patina ride for a while when your done with the pan.. or wait until its complete..
I had big hopes and dreams when I first started my 54 in July of 2008...Thought I could poor a bunch of funds into it and have it out on the road quick.. Then the Birth Cert. came in the mail.. and the purist came out of me.. and the brakes came on.. and I wanted her to hit the streets with a new life.. Update: She still hasnt hit the streets LOL.. but close....
Its on how you want to roll brotha.. Definitely a nice score though.. and early in the year.. Im March 1st.. |

After reading your post I surfed thru your gallery....WOW.....your setup for your 54' Rag is straight out of the perception I have intended for mine!!!! It looks amazing to say the least and viewing rides like yours is the reason I think I rather not be rolling ASAP in hopes of being able to EVENTUALLY have a sweet machine I can be proud of for years to come. I'm still waiting to see the birth cert. show up in the mail, I can't wait to see what it says!!!! |

WOW...You have done a TON of metal work!!! Your build looks super solid and well thought out, a real resto. I was having a heart attack thinking of just replacing my battery pan section. I'm actually getting those exact pans!!! I'm just on the fence on what to do...
1) Replace the passender side with the Gerson early oval pan half only.
or
2) Do both sides even though the driver side has about (2) nickel size holes.
any suggestions here??? |

Try to keep as much og metal as possible (if possible), even though Gerson is stepping up to the plate on early car parts there's nothing like og metal!!!
I didn't have a choice on my 54, but I'm using 53-55 metal only. Your car looks very solid....
If you only have nickle size rust holes patching would probably be your best bet......just depends on how much time and dinero you want to spend. These early car parts are not cheap. I learned that the hard way :!: |

Hey Steve.. We have that same combo at home.. Vee Dub & Camaro..
Ill Co. Sign on keeping as much metal as possible.. Thats true.. you can never replace OG Metal if you can avoid it.. but Gerson has put out some bad ass replacements.. Im going to pick up a pair of halves just to save.. |

RIGHT ON!!!!! I love my Camaro, mine is a 2SS with manual trans, if you click on my original VW pics posted above it will take you to my Flicker account to see some more pics of it, I did a few mild custom changes to it.
The paint on your car is amazing, it has so many different shades to it.
I think I'll get a pair of the pan halves as well and even if I don't use both, I'm sure having the other side will eventually come in handy one day down the road.
Hey how long did it take to get your birth cert??? I requested and paid for mine thru there online web site a week ago...waiting is driving me nuts!!! |

Thanks Mat, I'm leaning on staying with the original paint when I'm ready to paint it. I figure if she wore that color for almost 60 years I think it wouldn't be right changing it up... :D |
