you chould get a camber compensator

The typical available Camber Compensater does absolutely nothing to help negative camber and or correct negative camber. The only slight exemption is the ones with the over axle straps which in reality are doing more damage than good with a lowered VW.
The average compensater is designed for stock height suspensions. And unless you extend the straps and raise the pads on a lowered car are in the wrong position.

The CC design is to keep rear wheels from snapping to extreme positive camber and oversteering in hard cornering.
The same thing can be accomplished with shock limiting straps.

VOLKSWAGNUT wrote:
Limit straps on the rear shocks can help with the extended tucking.

The bars with the over the axle tube straps can act as a type of sway bar, plus control tucking, while the ones without the straps are designed to mainly keep the swing axle from tucking the wheel/tire.

As did... :-k ... do I ..
No way I'm ever on a high horse looking down...
A younger version of myself found the outer limits of ye ole' swing axle tuck syndrome.....
Needless to say.... it was a hell of an unpredictable snap over steer ride.. and a lesson of what NEVER to do again.. (even with a camber compensator or shock limiters)..
Nader was onto something...
Fortunately I've grown and learned into knowing.. limits.. and how to react to them..

I have many stupid self inflicted stories to tell.. and many if not all... I've learned from.. and yet... not scared to still try stupid stuff... live and learn.. its a great saying and motto..

Just a reminder.. what happens when the pendulum swings..
Specifically 1:49,... Swing axle over steer snap.. oh and no seat belt..
Them's tough..

Saturday morning.. at work.....No work......alone.. bored.. got tools.. good equipment at my disposal, Rock-a-billy a thumpin' on my wall hog stereo.. and Operation X in the shop...... hmmmmmmmm...... what to do....what to do.... :-k

Going up..

Up 4 inner down 4 outer that equaled about 2.7 degrees UP on the rear spring plate angle. Went from 15 to 17.7.

Raised the front too.. .. cranked the upper torsion all the way up and the bottom half way.. to keep it a smidgen softer.

Raised it up probably 1.5 maybe 2.. thats 38 mm to 50.8 mm metric...
Changed rear camber from -3.5 to -1.4...
Much better.. .. acceptable for now.

Reset rear and front toe... and still has a nice rake..

In fact Im diggin' it.. it actually has more of a High Boy look. Maybe Ill address it again next year to get the rear closer to 0 camber..

Thats the nice part... it can easily be changed.. well....for me at least.

Oh and have a lil' something thats supposed to be in the mail today....
Ill add "them" once Im home...

Ready for Steel In Motion 2015....

Its all good... maybe one year.. ... ..

Pop and I rolled down in the 51 Merc (Gray Ghost) about 6 on Friday and were car 212.. by the time we returned Sat. morn at 10:30.. numbers were up in the mid 500's.. Hot rods were backed up as we were waved through ( preregistered). The line of spectator cars were 3 times as long as the "event" cars.

It was a hot sun draining day and environment.

The club members we know that promotes and arranges the event were worn out.. .

I cant imagine... Probably takes a week to recover....maybe more.

Funny story... I tried to buy an event shirt Friday night and the table was closed.. by the time I got back to it Sat at 10:45.. they had ONE shirt left.. in 5 X..
It looked like a flag as I told them....... so I decided to buy it for the sake of "buying the last shirt", as money raised if for a good cause, proceeds to USO, plus I thought I could cut out the design and put it on a uniform shirt (more my style)...
When I was asked why I am buying the "flag" ... .. .. I told them I plan to have some fun with my wife when I get home and both of us are going to get in it topless.. ...
Got a good laugh.. and they thew in a sticker.... 8)

Fitting pending... pictures will be taken in front of Op X ... and will be posted.. with skin covered of course..

Nice to have some fun...

This is my pet peeve in the beetle forum when people give advice to use soap as window rubber lube. Eric and Barb used to be the biggest offenders of this advice, along with using roofing tar  Use windex, It's wet long enough to install but being alcohol based it will evaporate. I was an automotive glass guy before so I'm not talking out my ass. Plus you will need it anyway to clean the glass when you are done. 8)

Thats good advice Dan... I've used Windex.. it works..and its acts as you described, but I've also had to keep reapplying during an install.. I guess Im not as fast as you.... and the heat usually makes it evaporate fast around here.. :? .
I started using spray furniture wax like Pledge a few years to install glass. It stays slick for hours and hopefully leaves a coating of some protection under the seal..
The biggest downfall is it will release any tape you may be using..

The soap and bubbles... were leftover from the wash job....
I never used any sealer at the joint.... easy enough to add..

sixfootdan Sat May 23, 2015 8:27 am

I may have to try the furniture wax sometime 8)

I've read thru your build more times than I'd like to admit
I love the updated deck lid choice, very cool.
I haven't done an intro or build thread on here because my ride isn't a fenderless volksrod per say. Yet I'm glad the style has a home here at thesamba.
I'm doing a Corvair 110hp swap into my squareback, and also got the same flip the ring gear statements so I did just like you and reverse rotated the engine instead. Love it man look forward to seeing more pics and specs.

Thanks for stopping by and for the props..

I've actually been eyeing your progress on the Volksrods site..

Sorry for no updates... in fact.. to admit no driving either.

Spiders have attached Operation X to the floor.. and it has formed a nice oil leak trail.... :?

Trying to cleanup, sell and downsize my stash to fund a shop..

From Page 19... and thanks...

The quick history lesson.....
Drag racing for fastest "Air cooled" of the day.
Run 2... fan/generator belt snapped... (tends to over 5500 rpm so I've found now a few times... )
Run 3...no belt... = fastest "air cooled" of the day..
but....later...
Disqualified for "non Vw Power".. a little irritated..(see pages 19) but ... laughed it off..
Tied the belt on the mirror for my own trophy and drove it home.. with a smile face....well.....after I installed a new belt.

So.... its a memento... and "accessory" that stuck....
We don't leave home without it.. ... oh and at least 3 extra belts...and tools
It just ads ANOTHER conversation piece.... to the mix....

Camber is fixed.... but broke something in the process.... :x

Too pissed to report it right now.....
Rear spring plates cranked to 21.2 degrees (from 17.5)...um yeah... tight spring..... causes an issue....when a jack stand slips... (see page 13 for a bad reminder of why Im pissed now... )

No worries.... I know a guy that can fix it.... .... got to spend some money though... :?
.

VOLKSWAGNUT Wed Oct 21, 2015 2:18 pm

Ok.. (deep breath)..

This is what happens..(to me) IF I let the swing axles drop too far...
Broke the other (right) side during the camber correction.. . :x
Pretty much exactly where the left one broke way back...

and this... is what happens when you buy a replacement with the studs slightly off.. and had been melted out and replaced by a previous owner...
Glad I took pictures prior to the attempted install..
It cracked right where a slag trail was..

In all fairness.. Im not using the Corvair donut seals.. but the flat area with Merc Flathead flanges on my pipes.... so may it have stressed it in odd places...

The seller made good on his part.. and all is right with the world ....for now..
and its back and sitting up high on the road..

.

rgdedge Wed Oct 21, 2015 6:51 pm

Dammit boy. That sucks like a new shop vac. At least the seller backed it.
