coolerthanelvis wrote: Just a slight clarification to Clara's informative write-up. The driver's door CAN be locked from the inside on the later doors. However, if you get out and try to lock the door using the inside handle while the door is open, closing the door will cause it to unlock. Both doors do the same thing so passengers can't lock the door for you as they are getting out. I'm lazy so I often reach in through the window to lock the door and then slide the window shut. If the latch on my wing window wasn't broken, I'd probably be more careful about checking to see if the key is in my pocket and not still in the ignition.
Yes, that is how the push button mechanisms work.
Also, with the p/b, the same part locks when you lock it from inside or outside. So if you lock it from inside, you CAN unlock it from outside.

I should have been more clear, that I was meaning just the icepick doors, when I said the drivers door does not lock from the inside.

Another Question.
Does the beetle icepicks Pre. 54 fit and work in a bus?
They look the same.

why do you think my driver's side ice pick door won't lock from the inside?

EverettB wrote: Yes, push button doors lock by pushing them forward from the inside.

Same with the earlier ice-pick handle passenger doors.

depends on the year.
IIRC, the through early 61 bus handle is the same as a beetle, except the key if different. so the pass side has the same part number as a beetle.
I actually have a beetle door handle on my 53, it was missing the drivers door handle when I got the bus.

the late 61 - early 64 icepick is not the same as earlier icepick.

Because you have a driver side door mechanism in there.
If you locked it from the inside , you would not be able to unlock from the outside.
If you put a pass side mechanism in the door, you can lock it from the inside.
Then unlock the cargo door, to open the drivers door from the inside. Hope it's not a SC

Clara explained it more fully but short version:
Because they don't.

OK, thanks...reading the earlier posts confused me as to whether it should be locking or not

so...stock '63 icepick = not supposed to lock from the inside on the driver's side

Correct.

why would you want to lock your drivers door from the inside anyway?

Well, I guess that would depend on the neighborhood you're driving through....
