Some were sale before. :)

I'm guessing they thought the excitement would bring out the buyers.
At least one Barndoor sold at the event.

Four weeks and three days after it started, my OCTO Barndoor Reunion weekend is finally over. Picked up the Baja truck at the depot in PA this morning. All three barndoors look good, considering the heinous photos taken during transit.

My Baja:

Fixed flats on the Chromosexual:

Thanks again for all the fun, too bad its over.

Did they fix the flats or did they just need to be aired up?

Aired up. But at least one tire was off the bead. So hopefully they were able to set the bead before unloading. Otherwise the tire could be ruined.

Sorry to chime into this thread so late in the game, but at long last, my family and I finished the return trip from the OCTO extravaganza. It doesn't really take 4 weeks to make this trip, but after taking some time in New Mexico and sightseeing across the country we finally made it home.

We had a great time in So Cal as always and a huge thanks again to Johnny, Charlie, and everyone else who made this event happen. It was a blast catching up with old friends and meeting many new ones!

Also a big thanks to my co-pilot Colby, my wonderful wife Missy for putting up with our crazy travel plans, and the whole Barnaroo crew (Gibbs, Matt, MaHk, Danielle). Trials and tribulations are what make these trips unique - hope it was an adventure to remember, I know I will!

Many of these events have been well documented in earlier posts by others, but here are some of my memorable shots from the last 4 weeks...

Preparing to leave Charlotte early Sunday morning - this bus would still be in pieces if it weren't for Colby's help the night before (and many nights before that!)

Rolling out at 65 mph...

Quick stop of at Whitey's in Asheville to pick up/drop off.

Meeting up with Raffowitz and Danielle near Knoxville.

A little caravaning through Tennessee...

Met up with Gibbs and Matt after a nice nap near Nashville. They were still battling their well documented fuel delivery issue with the Chromosexual.

A little "on again - off again" with the Chromosexual...

Now its my turn to breakdown...waiting for the rollback after a spun drum disabled us near Jackson, TN

A big thanks to Gibbs for even considering this option...it resulted in one of my favorite pics from the trip!

My gracious hosts for the next leg of the trip...

I think I must be seeing things.

The culprit - swapping this drum out in Albuquerque at Stephen's place

Matt hard at work in the middle of the night.

After a late night of repairs, the PBR is back on the road! Stopping on Central Ave. the next morning for some Green Chile at the Frontier!

Some toasty windshield time across the desert...

Made it to CA!

Negotiating the LA freeways with the Chromosexual.

After 5 days on the road, we are ready for a break...

Great to see Ken's latest monster bus - had a great time at Nick's.

Met up with the family before OCTO and baby was totally into it...

A stop off at Charlie's before heading out of town - always a treat.

Heading up Cajon Pass at sunrise, just coming out of the morning fog.

Some great geology on the way up to Flagstaff, AZ

Making some adjustments just before the NM border.

Dropping down into the Chama Valley in northern NM, with my wife in the lead in the 67 deluxe.

Getting ready to caravan cross-country after a restful couple of weeks in northern NM.

The Brazos Cliffs in the distance as we head over the Tusas Mtn. toward Taos, NM

At the Taos Gorge Bridge west of town.

Storms brewing on the high plains in southeastern Colorado

View across Comanche National Grasslands just into southern Kansas.

A stop off at the Dalton Gang hideout in Meade, KS - now you know!

Across the Gyspum Hills of southeastern Kansas - actually quite scenic.

A stop off in Cairo, IL because its such a strange place...and to check out Shamwell's BBQ - Awesome!

Crossing both the Mississippi and Ohio Rivers on the way to Paducah, KY

Back in Charlotte, NC and what a trip! Over 5600 miles of beautiful country. Glad I have almost a year to recover before considering the next cross-country route...

wow!

"on again, off again with the chromosexual" classics

Really glad you and the family made it home safe and sound. Hope you didn't spend too long having to drive in the real hot weather. That can get pretty rough with kids in those padded child car seats.

We got very lucky with the weather... Temps were in the 70s and 80s all the way across with afternoon thunderstorms nearly every day. Just missed the heat wave by a week and a half! Kids did really great considering - children's iPad apps are a life saver!
Glad to hear the Philly Van Club BD collection arrived safe and sound despite the shipper negligence... To avoid this we should just all drive round trip for Barnfest 2022!

Jake,
glad you made it back home and thanks for delivering the gas tank.

I have a new level of respect for your family - My wife will not even get behind the wheel of the bus. hats off my friend.

Thanks for that. I will pass it on to Missy who drove the PBR back from G-ville solo last week... No, I wasn't worried...

She did great and I'm sure got some surprised looks along the way!

Jake! You made it back! What an AWESOME adventure. All these photos you posted are amazing. As well all the others within this thread. I'm sure from time to time folks will chime in here and drop pictures here and there. Your family are troopers. We are all, OCTO & BDM, glad you were able to make it out and be part of this gathering. Who knows when something like this will come together?? Just know, I'm down!!

Skim Wed Aug 29, 2012 6:54 pm

rhd aus, is this still around?

And does anybody remember this panel, nor cal in the 80s. Had a band or something in the back window.

Busfarmer Sun Oct 14, 2012 8:55 pm

Has anyone seen any magazines with coverage of the event yet?

Barndoor Mafia Sun Oct 14, 2012 9:33 pm

Yo Todd .......... you need to get a copy of Air Mighty and Let's Play VW's. Both publications covered this event. I do know HOT VW's covering should be published soon. These are ALL collectors issues. Niels Timmerman can guide you as to where you can get a copy and Shin Wantanabe can sort you out as well with getting a copy of his coverage. Both awesome coverage!!!

Lazaa Sun Mar 03, 2013 9:44 am

I didn't want to spend my time filming the gathering so i don't have lots of sequences but i thought it could be worth it to make a quick movie anyway, just to bring back some good memories from this wonderful event...
Sorry for those who don't have their bus in it, i stopped to film quickly to enjoy my time there ! :P

Looking forward to be at the 1st European Barndoor Gathering and live such a big event again. :D

Cheers,
Florian
