I've noticed that this topic comes up often, but as far as i can find there is not very much definitive answers about it.
the debate is, who prefers what, and why? it can be about the 2.2, 2.3 and 2.4 If im forgetting one, just throw it in. im curious to see what everyones opinion is. |

Ford's is the Duratec. GM is the Ecotec.
I've never compared the two side by side, but I saw a Duratech on display a few years ago and own an Ecotec, and the Duratech looked much smaller than the Ecotec.
I debated doing the Duratec before I bought my Eco, but at the time, I wasn't sure if my next project would be a baja or a rail. This is important because the Duratec in stock configuration points the throttle body at the firewall of a baja. The Ecotec points the throttle body straight up in the middle of the motor.
There was a build thread on here for a guy doing a turbo Duratec in a baja (I think he built an intake manifold). I think it was tacotrukin? It may be on STF too. |

A 2.2 Ecotec would be the simplest. It could be easily run with carbs and a distributor drive kit is available, if you don't want to transplant the FI.
The 2.4 Ecotec and the 2.3 Duratec both have continuous VVT, so you'd need to use the complete wiring harness and brain out of the donor car.
I don't know anything about the 2.0 Duratec. The Ecotec comes in 2.0 and 1.8 versions as well. The 2.0s all seem to be forced induction.
Ford also has a 2.5 I4 but I don't know if it's a variant of the Duratec engine. |

at my local buggy shop, a lot of people seem to be going eco. it seems majority of people converting on here are going dura.
my dads friend has a 2.4 eco on his rail, turbo-d i think, and it is just wicked fast. and he says they are readily available, and just dirt cheap.
i only know about their tech specs, nothing like the throttle positioning that was mentioned. thats great to know.
i was just reading lately the the 2.4 eco starts at 150-160HP but you can easily juice to 400 without having to change anything on the case which i find amazing. |
