..and all I can say is 'Wow - i have a completely different car  '

I promise I will post a full review, with photos and details and such this weekend, but I could not resist some anecdotal experiences:

1. 405 N before 101 has an incline that my previous 2.1 could barely do 50, and when fully loaded was sluggish and more like 45 with throttle wide-open.
With tencent engine, exhaust and throttle body? I was accelerating UP the incline, in the passing lane and was doing 65 without difficulty. whoa!

2. I can easily do 70+ on the freeway. I haven't, but based on how much more room i have on the throttle -it sure feels like it. i have an automatic, and i'm afraid to put the throttle down to the floor. Okay, not 'afraid' as cautious at this time, but I hope you get the drift - for the first time, i feel like i have some emergency passing power..

3. the throttle response and low-end performance is amazing. i can actually tap the throttle and get an almost off-the-line jerk in performance. It isn't my porsche, but i could NEVER spill someone's coffee in the old 2.1.!

4. i'm actually concerned i could get myself a ticket in the westy. I never had that thought cross my mind before. i could have the throttle wide open and never be speeding on the freeway, ergo no tickets. Perhaps chris should offer an optional radar detector with his engine?

5. where are the 'tencent 2.2' decals?

cheers,

chris

Congratulations. I would love to have all those parts in my Bluestar. Nice write up. Tell us more.

The window sticker would make it even quicker. :P

Hey drop out in three semesters. You will be doing burnouts with your van in no time.

Joking... good luck to the kid. Tell him to get a degree that makes money. Dad needs a new engine and some fancy exhaust.

Dude, I have driven that grade up the 405 grinding away in 3rd, hoping the traffic doesnt back up, and trying to go fast enuf to stay out of the right lane where the trucks inch up the hill.

Good for you man...I have 10c envy fo sho.

DAIZEE Fri Aug 19, 2011 6:59 pm

GOOD ON YOU! I don't have a tencent motor but I know the feeling about having power and still more throttle. Haven't done any great inclines YET but I cruise at 100 kph (it revs too high at 105+) over hill and dale and I still have power to pull out and pass. I can now drive in the centre lane of a 3 lane regularly. For me it's been 18 frustrating mths BUT isn't it a wonderful feeling to actually feel that power and the extra power behind it :!: 8) I can feel happiness for you.

chris Ever hear of 'engine break-in'?? Only 50 mi and driving like that would be grounds to cancel 'any' warranty.

BOO, Mory, BOO.

Sounds like a perfect way to break it in. Get it out on the highway at different speeds. Make it work, exercise it.

Pussyfooting around the block is not the correct way to break in the engine.

Awesome! Sounds like your old engine was pretty beat. This one should keep you smiling a very long time. :D

Just BE SURE in those high load situations to let off the pedal every couple/few seconds to give the rings time to cool and allow the engine vacuum to suck the swarf off the cylinder walls and indeed pushing it is what seats the rings most effectively.

congrats chris
I just picked up my 1.8T from stephan, today, and I feel your enthusiasm

I just rolled the speedo over 54 miles. I agree, WOW! Living in colorado at this altitude already a challange for my old 1.9, but this new tencentlife no challange. I have yet to put enough miles on it to do the eisenhower climb, (that will come in about a month) but i have cruised all around denver and the great thing is this van now pulls in 3rd! I roll in the left lane. No more dirty looks! I loved working with Chris, stand up dude. I'm full of stupid questioins and Chris answered with out any hesitation and made me feel like he really gave a shit. This guy is a true artist. I opted for the matching S/S exhaust as well, BadASS! I highly recommend if you want to upgrade your engine, and you want to keep it German! You can't go wrong with a Vanistan! Thanks for the early X-mas present!

Although I don't have the 10 cent engine, I know the feeling of satisfaction and the highness of having a good engine under/behind you. Congrats.

Congrats man stoked for you I'll be doing a bostig conv soon

Update!

I've been driving the car for a while now - things seem to be going well. I haven't had any problems, performance is good..huge improvement still.

..although parallel parking is a little harder - between the new TB and the engine/exhaust combo, the car accelerates with just a light type on the pedal! i'm not complaining 8)

only minor/negative is the whole package sounds great - but is definitely louder in the vehicle than the stock exhaust at idle and i've got a little vibration i have to look at. new engine mounts were installed when the engine was done, so it ain't that.. it feels like idle is a few rpm lower than it 'wants' to be - i'll talk to chris about that and discuss with my mechanic.

when driving it sounds great

One more comment: previous engine i had the buzzer / oil light flicker when i pushed the engine on a hot day. this car - not at all. never seen it once, in all the same places that i saw it before. i *did* get the oil-cooler from chris as well, so that is likely partly to blame!

After driving Chris's personal jalopie test dummy at Syncro Solstice, all I can say is <drool>.
I'm going this route as well when the 2.1 craps. Of course, I'll order it before it blows, right.
A thing of beauty.
Nice thread!
Bring it down to PDX for the Dec 11 Christmas meet 8)
