Finally (safe) in the driveway...so here goes. Reader digest story: in a garage for nearly 40 years before barn fell down. I have a large folder of VW dealer repair bills. Receipts tell of fender benders in early 60's, $1.27 oil changes, set of white wall, etc.

Top down for 1st time in 40 years

Next to wifes desiel sport wagon

What color is this car? Not the drab dark green but the "metallic green" under....

I'm looking for information on color. What is the original color here? It is a lighter green metallic.

Nice vert...did ya get the taillights and the rear deck lid? whada going to do with it?

type4split Mon Aug 22, 2011 10:21 am

Ya, I think the tail lights are in a bag of stuff. The only thing i can find missing is the rear view mirror.

There was a 'vert deck lid, but it was a 58-63 style. I picked up a oval one few weeks back.

plan to sort out what it needs, but I have '56 donor channels on the way. Also 80% of other donor metal on hand. Headliner and interior looks savagable. Probably do what is needed to get back on road.

Plan to try and save paint, that is why I need info on color?? anyone.?

Try getting a birth certificate to know for sure. I think it looks like Agave Green and it was available for verts of that year. The interior metallic green does not look like a stock color? It could have been that is was agave green originally, then it was completely re-sprayed that metallic green color, and then the outside was resprayed in the original Agave green? Just a theory, but if you want to know for sure, get a birth certificate...

Nice start for a vert restore BTW! 8)

Not discounting your theory, but with all the "lighter metalic" color in hard to pain areas, I wonder if they would have went to the trouble (or had the skill) to cover under hood, dash, etc.?

Also i think Agava is more of a pastel color?

My wife is working on Birth Cert. Hope there is color documented. thanks for the kind words.

Gas tank seems to match lighter color....

You might want to post the color question here in the official oval vert thread...

http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=341124

You'll get real good information there from more oval vert owners. That metallic green color really looks different from all the vert colors I have seen.

If it's a Metallic Green, it's probably L316 Almond Green

The color looks like Amazon Green. I have a friend with a 58 Ghia cabriolet with some OG Amazon Green still on the car and the color looks the same, though I don't know if this color was available for beetle cabriolets.

Nice find! Pick at it slowly and photograph every step you do, just to ease reassembly.

I don't know much about color, post up some more pictures when you can. How's the pans?

Looks complete and congrats

thanks everyone!!! in the vert thread sound like we have a winner on color.....L417 Amazon.

The interior seems to be original white

very nice find keep us updated on it's progress

Gotta love under-coating. pulled it off the front inner fender

Call me crazy, but i think I can save these heater channels. tops are in decent shape. Just need the bottom plate and running board attachment area.

At least for the time being. I have a full set of clean '56 sedan channels, but don't wanna dive too deep just yet. The floor pans are still in good shape. They only need a patch here and there.

very cool,
i do think once you blast or strip away the the rusted area's you will find them worse then you may think.

super cool project wish it was mine

type4split Tue Sep 06, 2011 9:25 am

As always the drivers seems worse than the passenger side. we will see once I get into it further.

interior is cleaning up nicely-
sides and top of front seats

Started on a small spot on the rear

type4split Wed Sep 07, 2011 4:59 am

The deck lid on the left came on the car, but if I'm not mistaken the one one the right is correct for a '57

nlorntson Wed Sep 07, 2011 5:53 am

Yep, right one is for a 57.

Thats the detroit vert. I have a gang of pics from the previous owner. Its a fairly complete car but needs a front and rear clip.
