that is the connection for the crankcase breather at the oil fill.... make sure you hook up the 50mm preheat hose also. I see you are in Raleigh, in another month your carbureter and driveability will thank you for having the preheat hooked up...

I figured I add a question here vs. starting a new topic...I just came back from a bug show and half had single carb and 80% of those had those aftermarket air filters. I assumed that they would have use the oil bath filter or is it more about wanting chrome? In hindsight, I should have asked them but I doubt they appreciate a noob questioning their use of such a filter.

Gargamel,

I think alot of people put them on because they think:

1. they look cool.
2. Its too much hassle to find the right one
3. All that hose stuff isnt needed, its unecessary emissions stuff.
4. they work better

In each case they are wrong. Well, YMMV on #1. I like the classic look better.

Also, the newer beetles (73 and up) went to a paper air filter instead of the oil bath fromt he factory
