Looking good Dave. Tomnotch gave the best explination for Notch trunk dents I've ever seen. He said they are from "push starting the cars, after the 6 volt battery went dead". Every Notch trunk lid I've come across, has some dents on them in the area where someone would put their hands for pushing. Normally, the exception would have been my 71 Notch, but it had some too (the FI must have quit on 1 of the owners  ).
Merry Christmas Dave, and I hope to see you in June at the Invasion. 8) |

I think Tom is onto something, both my '65 and the '64 parts notch have dents too. |

G'day All
I think that I can say that all of the major body work is done - have I said that before? And so today, I blew hi-build primer over the whole car. Here are some pics. Overall, I am very pleased. There will be a few days of blocking and then the car should be ready for colour. My 'goal' is to have all of the painting done by the end of February - keep your fingers crossed
By the way, does anyone have the 1500 badge for the back deck, at least that what I assume sits there.

Looking good Dave. I hope the weather holds out for you, so you can get it painted. I know how that goes though, as I've delt with it a few times myself.
I believe the Volkswagen and the 1500 emblem are the same as a split window bus uses, but you'd have to ask the 1500 club to be sure. There might be 1 (or more) in the classifieds too, so you might want to take a look there as well. |

I recommend obtaining your badges before you paint the car. It's been my experience (at least with my car) that the badge may not line up with the holes in the trunk lid. It seems VW changed lids and badges more often than their underwear... It would be a shame if you had to drill new holes, fill the old ones and then repaint. |

Good morning
Yesterday, I spent another 6 hours sanding. Funny, I thought that when I had blown on the hi-build, all I would have to do is sand it smooth. But, of course, I found bumps, valleys and other imperfections that needed attention. So far, I've spent about 12 hours sanding and along with the help of my friend Dave, we've spent a combined 24 hours - damn, that's a lot of sanding and that makes for a lot of dust. The garage will need a serious clean up when this is done.
Here's shot of the trunk with four small bits that needed attention
and here is my arty shot ...
Even with the need for an extra level of primer, I'm still on target for an end of February final paint job. Keep your fingers crossed.

I must commend you on doing this project.
It would of been all too easy to call it a day and another '3 would of been history.
Keep up the good work. |

Looks good Dave. You're really gaining on it. 8) I need to get off my butt, and get back to working on the T-34. |

Ha Ha, I know the feeling well. I just wish the freshly dumped snow would disappear, and the air temp rise. I'm itching to get back to it. |

Good day all
The outside of the car has been blocked and is almost ready for the final painting. However, before that gets done I need to paint the inside of the fenders, doors and hoods. We had some warmer weather this weekend and I took advantage of it. I first masked off the outside of the fenders:
and then painted the insides, base and clear.
The garage as a paint booth:
Now I have to do the hoods and doors - let's hope the weather stays warm. By the way, I did find a '1500' script and it fits the holes on the trunk lid.

Looking good Dave. I probably wouln't have papered off the outside, as I'd probably would still be doing some final sanding on them right up until they get sealed right before painting. You also wouldn't have the sharp tape line that you're going to have to blend.
What you're doing right now reminds me of Thanksgiving back in 2007, painting the insides of the rear fenders and those parts of the 71 Notch. 8) On it, I did the front 1 weekend, then the rear the next weekend. I final primed and painted the inside 1 day, then did the outside the next day. That way, the car was painted when it went back together. 8)
Are you going to assemble it all, then paint the outside? |

Hi Bob
Yes, the plan is to get all these inside bits done and then put the whole car back together to do the outside. I still have to blow on a bit of primer on a couple of places on the outer body where I found low spots and did some more tinging with the hammer and dolly. My sense now is that the surface is as good as it will get.

That might work out ok, but sometimes it's a lot of work, and makes for a very long day of just spraying. BTDT. I think that's why I did the Notch like I did. Well that, and it wasn't metallic. My 65 Notch got shot all in 1 go, but it was metallic. Also, on my T-34 I couldn't remove the fenders by just unbolting them, so it got shot all together. That was a long day, between laying down the sealer coat, the multiple coats of color, and then the clear coat. I think I started at 9 am, and finished about 9 pm. And that was having everything taped off that I didn't want over sprayed. |

Some days are certainly longer than others but then I've now been working on this car for 6 years so what's a day here and there? At this time, I have now painted the insides of the fenders, doors, and hoods. I now need to do the door jams. I think that I will then mask off the insides of the these parts so that I can lay another coat of primer on the outsides. It's such a pain. I thought that I had the outside all done and blocked but you know, you continue to find bits that need some work. But I figure another Saturday and I will have the final primer on the outside and blocked. I'm still hoping for the end of Febrary ... well, maybe the first weekend in March. We'll see.

Greetings All
Well, here it is - all in velvet green. What do you think? Don't look too closely as there needs to be a fair bit of cutting and polishing. I think that I need better light in the garage and/or better glasses when I am trying to get a smooth finish!
of course, I need to do something with the ride height and those wheels.
