Starting with a 48 hp stock motor what's the best way to get 100 hp? Cylinders? Carbs? Exhaust? Was just wondering what the gurus thought.

You should really check the performance forum. There are endless possibilities! :)

Why 100 horsepower?

Possibilities ARE endless. Only problem is, once you get to 100hp, you'll wonder what it'll take to get to 125hp.... then 150hp... and so on. Horsepower is very adictive! According to "How to Hot Rod Aircooled engines" if you took a stock 1600 DP engine and added dual carbs (Webers, Dellorto's etc..) Merged Exhaust, ratio rockers, and a few other bolt-ons you should be around 100hp at the crank. Granted, if you built a 1776cc or a 1915cc.... or HECK why not a 2332cc then HP numbers wil grow exponentially! It all comes down to how much HP you need, and how much you can afford.

If you want 100hp why did a classic beetle appeal to you? Also that 100hp will be double what the rest of the car is designed to handle. Do you have brakes, suspension, transmission, and everything else needed to handle the extra HP in your budget? Also if you want reliability from the double HP engine I suggest having a professional do the build, they don't ask they brag  .

Just remember... Cheap, fast, reliable. Pick two...

Assuming the rest of the car is in good repair, a stock Bug chassis should handle 100hp no problem! Good tires are a must, and upgrading to front disc brakes wouldn't hurt.... but in my opinion.... 100hp is not asking too much.

That's the kicker though. I don't think it's a bad idea to ad some performance, to each their own. I just think a majority of the guys I see trying to ad it forget what comes first. I bet I could get close to that much with the right heads, carburation, and exhaust on my little 1600. I got 115hp out of a 1000cc air cooled motorcycle engine from 1978 without cracking the cases. The most important thing is to have a budget twice what you think it will take, because it's always cost twice as much.

be prepared to do a lot of reading. it also took some time to learn all the lingo. i too was impressed with how much horsepower can be gained without splitting the case but above is right. the possibilities are endless!!!

If I had a 100% stock 1600cc DP motor and wanted a little more pep for a dailly driver I'd get merged headers, single quiet pack, dual carbs (I hear Webers are pretty neat) and be done with it. That whould get you around 75-80hp. Fairly cheap, pretty reliable, and most of all tons of fun. When you're bored of that, then its time to split the case and go big cyl./stroker.

I will be installing my dual weber ict's on mine tomorrow. Mine is a 1600DP, 009 distributor, headers with dual glasspacks.
"not sure how much stock hp mine is"?,
I am curious to see how different mine is. I am not looking for big hp gains right now though. Just more zip up the hills!
