The Nos one on that link above didnt convince you? Both my 52 and 51 are straight. I might be wrong but i cant see them making a special bent version just to throw us off 60 years later.

You have to imagine the van heavily loaded, and the wheels hitting potholes, cornering etc and then factor in time....

I think the reason they are bent the same is that they are both at maximum bent, eg they have now been bent to a point where they are out the way of the force causing it. They didnt have to bend at the same time or at the same rate but they both finally got to the same end point...

To save you searching, here is the picture of the Nos rear frame, from the link above. It is the only barndoor one i have ever heard about or seen with my own eyes.

It might even be cast, still it will be alloy steel, have you ever tried to break one of these pieces ? ( confessing I only struggled with the same piece of a beetle chassis, but obviously it should be the same style and steel type-IT WILL NOT SNAP, even if cut to a minimum area). I'm going with 52panel that the bump stops will be bendt by the spring plates until they're out of the way. Look at that suspension pic posted before . It seems as if the spring plate has kind of a kink or nick where it would touch the upper stop. The lower stops would be bendt from your theory and they probably are too. But speaking from house building experience with my 67 fat chick single cab, you always load until it drops on the stops liturally speaking. I have been making 1000s of km on the bump stops probably.....
Chassis still is tasty and a beauty, would be a shame to get that detail wrong.

Nice!

Was the engine bay on this paint Dove Blue from the factory?
I know some Buses are painted and some are primer.

Either way, it looks great.

WOW, what a beauty !

52deluxebug Sat Dec 01, 2012 3:38 am

Thanks!

When we started to strip it back and took away the paint back to the bare metal, we did find signs of blue in the engine bay, so I'm guessing this bus did come with blue in the engine bay

Thanks again for the kind comments!

Fantasic resto....just one point on the torsion housing, in my opinion they are there for a reason, to stop over travel of the spring plates and to stop putting undue strain on the torsion bars.
