Better you than me.....after seeing more pic's of this bus, I'm glad he didn't accept my offer  . Besides, it's great to hear that it's staying in the destination country. All the best for the forth coming restoration.

Just take a week off and you'll have it done!

I'm going to finish the '52 first, and wrap up a couple other smaller projects. I like to take a year off between huge metal working projects. It helps me to stay married.

Here's a few more pics for those who made offers on the bus, I think you will be happy that this beast is not in your garage. She's got serious issues. Brings to mind the expression, "Ridden hard and put away wet". Particularly the side that was in the river is crazy screwed.

The remains of the door from the river.

Apparently jail bars are unaffected by water

The set of deep skylight window sections that came with the bus. I lead the previous owner to these. I had known about them for 15 years, but no one had a '53 an earlier deluxe to make use of them.

River side door stamped with the body number.

Dash

Wicked drivers side door latch. This might be from a barn, door.

Rear bumper. The first time I saw one of these I figured it was home made. Now having 3 identical ones, I'm convinced they were dealer installed.

On the '53 standard (the burnt one) 218 Vin#'s later.

That canadian bus is in good hand! First year of vw delivered by Vws Canada WOW!
What is the signification of that number? 151
Still dreaming to find one on the east part of the country...but in better shape! :D
I will watch for more about the 24g thread...

Just coming up for air here! Wow! Three years ago in the forest here in Oregon on a tip,I discovered a bus upside down down a hill next to a road-trail. It is a 54 or 55 standard in worse shape than this 23 window. I am going to get that bus! Ken, great inspiration!!You are doing fantastic work on the South American bus. This 23 I think should get ahead in line. Just my two cents!! Wow!! :D

WOOW!!!! :o

I know 2 or 3 owners who would LOVE those panels, me included.

The reason I want this started sooner is so I can use your undoubtedly awesome thread as aid for my similar restoration. Particularly interested in the inside window liners.

Looking at this more closely, it's an M51, which is the M code for dual generator.

Do you need pictures of this section? They are really simple. The inner panel is just a flat piece of sheet metal spot welded to the inner edge of the skylight hole. These early sunroofs are interesting, as the edges of the hole are pot welded to the outer roof panel, not pressed in like a later sunroof. The sky light sections are a super lucky score. I should take some pics of them from you, the pressing part is actually two pieces gas welded together. You would never be able to see this unless they were cut out of the bus.

That would very cool. Thanks
I saw from what's left of mine that the inside panel is very simple. What do you have planned for the damaged/missing side and corner windows. Got a donner panel? How far up the years does the pressing style on the rear inside window liners (not the skylights) go?
Cheers

I just gotta follow this one!

Those winter scenes are very nostalgic for me. Manys the time I went on Volkswagen Safari in the dead of winter freezing my extremities for some part or car.

It's always been my understanding that those bumpers are a Canadian thing. I wonder if they were installed at the port or the dealer?
