Thought I'd post up the 72 I've been working on lately. Sold off the 58 single cab because I needed a smooth vehicle to travel in. Don't get me wrong, I like the old split window, but it is more of a piece of farm equipment than an actual vehicle. With that in mind, I picked up this nice 72 from Berkeley Ca. So far it has been the most original, least molested and finest running of any VW I've ever purchased (as purchased). Even the clock works!

Does anything appear to be missing or wrong in the engine compartment?
(I know about the air filter to body snorkel, and the missing start injector)

Best yet, look at all the stuff that came with it. A few extra rubbers, an interior kit I have no intention of installing, a muir manual, and even some bonus coolant. :shock: (The PO had no idea about cars. He told me on the phone that it was carbureted and didn't know how to work the heater or vent controls.)

Finally, does anybody know what this rack is off of?

The four parts that connect the rack to the roof are hose clamped on and aren't part of the rack. But the four posts with rubber feet are. What the heck is this rack from??

Also, how would I know if this car came originally with overriders?

Check out the aftermarket side stripping that a PO put on. Instead of a chrome line, a black line. It almost doesn't look that bad. I will replace it eventually.

Does it look lowered a little? I can't tell.

Looks great and does look like it escaped the molesters! Not sure on what's missing as I'm a twin carb guy but it does look OG in there too.

It does look like a Good Score! You'll need 20+ feet of 5/16" gas hose and new clamps to replace All your gas hoses. The original woven hoses will spring pin hole leaks any time now!

I made the switch from a 67 crew cab and I have to agree, ride is a bit smoother. I'm also in a 72 square (f.i.) which looks pretty identical to yours. It's white, but the original color was the same. Mines got over riders front and rear and the same bumper with the rubber strip in the center, I think that was stock. I've got the same carpet kit too ( in oatmeal not black), which I'm in the process of installing. Looks nice so far, you should try it.

Hmmm fuel lines. I suppose that would be a good idea. I've actually seen now a few VW burning up in front of me. (Never mine). Nick, thanks for the jegs link. I'll pick that up and get replacing.

So there is a short soft span from the tank to the hard line, then again at the hardline to the rear. Right? And then it's all engine compartment lines. Will that hose work for my fuel rails as well? Or would I need different hose. Also, are we talking normal screw driver hose clamps or those weird ones that hold the fuel rail together?

And ideas about my rack?

There is a bunch by the fuel pump supply/return/filter/dampener etc. I eliminated my metal 'pancake' dampener. Replace ALL of it! I just bought 20 worm drive slotted/hex head clamps at my local Knecht's for $13.80. Use the hex head to tighten them. I think I'm gonna need more clamps!

Umm, woah dudes. I normally don't chime in with my opinions....but that looks like "universal" fuel hose correct? D-Jet runs around 30psig right? Most "universal" fuel line is only rated to 15psig. Why not just go to Pelican Parts dot com and order up the correct High Pressure rated 7mm and 9mm hoses for supply and return? It's the correct made in Germany stuff. I've replaced all fuel lines on 1 stock squareback FI and one L-Jet bug. I would never use "universal" fuel lines.......never on a FI car.

The modern fuel hose is called "universal" but is rated to 50psi, more then plenty for djet :wink: SAE30R6 has a bust rating of 175psi, plus Jegs usually substitutes it with SAE30R7 which is even better stuff. It's 2011 there isn't a lot of carbed cars on the road anymore since FI has been standard for the last 25 years or so.

Kay, I can buy that in concept. Still not gonna change what I put on my VW's or friends VW's. 8)

When I upgraded the entire fuel system on my honda (turbo and ethanol, giggity) I did a ton of research on fuel hose. For us the SAE30R6 and SAE30R7 is way overkill plus you can buy it at your local FLAPS or online from Jegs and Summit for cheap, it's a no-brainer. It also has the Russ and Jake R. stamp of approval, it's good stuff.

Nice. So are there two sizes of line (7mm and 9mm inlet/outlet) that need replacing and the 5/16 universal will work for both? That sounds odd. But let me know if I'm understanding correctly.

those hose clamps are the best... i got tired of hose get cut by the worm gear clamps so ive gone to these, best decision ever.. i even discovered that where i removed one of the hoses i had cut through the hose and was leaking fuel :shock: im just glad i didnt turn into a fireball

The 5/16 is about the same as 9mm. For anything that uses 7mm, you use the clamp to reduce/tighten down to it. You just cannot make the hose bigger, but can tighten down to a little smaller.

Easy, I found them at Kragen and Pep Boys. They are common. In fact, they had too many sizes so I bought a couple and used the ones that fit best. Bring a snippet of new hose with you and see how they will fit best. Someone posted a link online a while ago but I always found them at most FLAPS.

Looks real good. I just picked up a '71 fastback and want to add the same fogs & bumpers.
