View original topic: Can I use 65 fenders on my 68 bug?
samsoares54 Thu Oct 27, 2011 12:47 am

I have a 68 bug. My brother has a 65.

He put on wide custom fenders for his 65 and my question is: can I re-use his old front fenders on my 68 (that desperately needs new fenders)???

Please help! Much appreciated!

the fenders well bolt up with no problems.. But you well have problems with bumpers, the rear 65 fenders have A small slot and A round hole for the bumper brackets were the 68 fenders have A long slotted hole. on the front 65 had the bumper holes in the apron and 68 has them in the fenders,, So you well need to cut some holes, git custom bumper brackets(yes thy make them), or run no bumpers..

If you do a search for early fenders on a late bug, there is a lot of info already posted. They do bolt right on and the only issue has been mentioned about the bumper brackets. CIP1 and some other vendors sell adapter bumper brackets specifically for what you want to do.

I have used the bumper adapter brackets before. They allow you to use the Euro blade with the 68- on fenders. I have never seen an adapter bracket using Euro blades with early fenders on a 68- car. I know you can use teh early euro blade with an early bracket but I did not think it worked on the cars bumper bolt up points. If anyone has a picture of this, please share it.
Thanks

yep! check my pics too. 69 bug with early fenders. I cut holes in the fenders for the bumper brackets, then made my own brackets from 3/16" x 1 1/2" flat bar to mount early bumpers. They bolt to the factory 69 location. For late bumpers just cut a longer hole. You will also need a set of early headlight assemblies. The rears go right on, either cut the bumper bracket hole longer to fit the 68 bracket or drill new holes to match the 68 in early brackets for early bumpers.

That what I thought had to be done. Its not as easy as buying an aftermarket bracket

Not! Those brackets only work with the later fenders and early bumpers. Not early bumper and early fender combo

There are "conversion " bumper brackets available, but last time I saw them in a catalog they were 70$ a pair, which was too rich for me, and that was 3 or 4 years ago. I'm thinking it might have been in a Mid America Motor Works catalog.

Ummm - yeah they do make them - the only issue is lack of holes in the fenders - I did custom brackets myself on my VW woodie - slotted the fenders and fabbed brackets which I think is cleaner that the following. But do whatever you want.

Wow! that's an interesting bracket. It drops down below the fender then comes back up to were the bumper should be. A bit clumbsy, but I guess they will double as skids, or maybe hit those parking lot blocks before your front valance. ;)
