Been a while since I've had this car, 2006, and checked to see if i had put pics up before, but no. A lot of time, miles and money under the bridge and it's now time to get it going. Bit of a story first. I bought it from a cat who I knew in Perth*, when I lived in Sydney, so flew over two weekends on the trot to get it going - the car shipping people don't touch non-starters - and had it sent to Sydney (keep a running total of $$$ in your mind.. : ))

*the car had not been on the road since 1996 and partially dismantled since then. The paint was a blow over respray, if original would have kept it and not taken resto much further

A Type 2 resto got in the way a bit but the decision was made to go over the Type 3 in the same way, the odd bit of rust here and a previous repair which required correcting meant it got stripped down back in 2008.

Not many photos exist of panel work as I wasn't there during the days but all straight and ready for paint
Sexy bits cadmium plated

Great straight out of the gun...

New headlining

And that's where is sat for 2.5years I as I went to the UK and ended up staying on till 3 weeks ago, back purely to put this back together again!

So I'll be posting a lot of questions, Ive got the Bentley, Ball & an Aussie manual but I'm eyeballing this stuff for the first time in 3 years and it's all in bits...

I hope to have it like this, I love the original look

Ok, I've got a windlass question. I've got the pop out window windlass in place, two nice long bits for the driver and passenger doors - but too other short straight pieces? Where do they go?

The heater/vent knob at knee level on either side of the firewall - it has a plate with one screw and the plastic knob itself - how does this attach to the wire to pull the flap up and down? What am I missing?

The cable clips underneath the fresh air boxes - is this to secure the wire for the door switches running across the front of the car either side?

(and wasn't there a thread showing a refurb of the engine decklid and recommended materials?)

Thanks for any help

The 2 short straight pieces might be for the Bottom edge of your doors?

There is a sliding rectangular plate behind the plastic knob that the wire clips into.

The cable clips hold the cable that releases the seatback to fold forward when the doors are opened.

BerT3 is selling a nice reproduction of the engine lid/rear deck material.

- Hmm I've not fitted the long pieces yet so could be Mike, can't think of anywhere else

- Ok i'll have to look for that, cant find any other pics or diagrams of it

- Blimey thats the first I've heard of such a cable - I don't think I have it.

Ok cool I'll look into that

Cheers Mike

Haha that's reallly funny, but my tears are genuine : ) Australian Type 3s are all over the shop. Which makes wiring diagrams fun, when comparing whats in there, and various other oddities. But to answer your question, yep, drums all round and wide 5 on this car.

^ got the sliding plate, but that's all it is a plate, can't see where that wire would secure - surely it's not just friction held with a washer is it once the knob is screw on? As the plastic rotates on the knob you can't fasten tight anyhow - I must be missing something. I see one of the wire bent at an angle but can't fathom with what I've got how it stays securely fixed...

The wire is just clamped between the square plate and the knob bolt. My '66 wire is still clamped to the knob inside.

The small plates are '66-67 I think. The large plate in the orange car is a '71

^ ah, fair-do's then, just need a washer and tighten her down. Just didn't 'feel' Volkswagen to have it like that with the risk of it not securing enough. Ill grease that wire make it easier to move then. Thanks Mike for putting that up

Yeah cool, that was the one in Newcastle? I was gonna ask the bloke if I could go up and take a heap of pics as it would help me no end in my resto. Lovely car. Has he painted the roof already? Dont remember it white? They will defo be sister cars, apart from the roof.
