Hi, anyone know off hand what the correct dimension is to maintain the step when resurfacing the flywheel for a '91 Vanagon? (the step between the pressure plate mounting surface and the disc contact surface) Thanks!

Can you call a local brake and clutch shop and ask? They should have the number in resurfacing shop manual.

When ever I had a flywheel resurfaced, the shop new the correct dimensions. 2 thousandths sticks out in my mind....I used south side brake and clutch in Tacoma, WA. But I am sure you could call any clutch specific shop.

I am bringing up an old thread here to see if a dimension for the step is known here. I would like to measure it, I put a clutch in every year due to slippage and would like to know the correct dimension to see if that is the problem. Or is it all that HP?

I Googled it and came up with .913-.918 height difference between the clutch cover mounting surface and the wear surface of the flywheel. This is specific to the 2.1 Wasserboxer engine

The correct step height of a new flywheel and what it should be ground back to is 0.971" from fresh ground wear surface to the pressure plate step. I got this from a flywheel machining book and confirmed it on a virgin flywheel. Hope this helps someone else because all of the dimensions listed in this post appear to be incorrect. This should be the same dimension for all 1.9 or 2.1 engines except maybe the diesels.

wow! what a terrific first post! welcome to the Samba and thank you for that info. i've been looking for that measurement. what book is it that contains this info? would it be possible to post a photo of the cover and the Vanagon page?
