So today i brought home a 1967 Bug that i bought from an 88 year old man who owned it since 1991. Its gonna be a learning experience as this is my first vw, and first car :shock: . Im only 16, but i've studied up and am ready to learn some more. I worked over two summers mowing a lot of lawns, and basically just liquidating my room. Luckily, i can now get a real part time job instead of mowing lawns now that i'm 16. Nevertheless, the bug.

1967. Sedan. og 1500cc engine. Og paint on the interior. PO recently had a new interior installed. I kinda like the style he made it. Anyways, it does have some rust, (all vws do), mainly on the driver's side door lower hinge. and on the actual body itself. Im probably going to have it cut out and weld in a new piece. the last paint job was pretty crappy and there are bubbles i'm going to have to sand and prime until i get a paint job on it.

Some Pros: Pretty original, heat works so thats a plus (live in WA), all the electricals work, even the dome light, the headliner is og(and beautiful), horn works, on the drive home from the purchase we (my father and i) got it up to 68mph on the freeway. PO had a new steering box installed.

Cons: got to fix the body rust, missing the og radio, I Need more funds :D

Anyways, this is going to be a journey for my father, who knows a bit about vws, he had a 72 back in the 80s. Any help would be appreciated.
My plans are to drop it a spindle or two. new paint( same Savannah Beige), some BRMs maybe, just clean it up and make it a nicer daily driver than it already is. :lol:

Well nice looking from the pictures...A 67 is best kept stock as possible...I do realize that you are young...but golly think of it this way your first car, a desireable year kept stock will have far more resale value and a broader market share. However it is yours so butcher it up.

Nice! 67 seems to be one of the "magical" years for bugs. I'm loving mine that I've had for about 6 years now. I've resisted the temptation to mess with the stock setup, and I'm so glad I did. It's been a reliable, comfortable car. Awesome find! Just drive it and enjoy it for what it is.

Glad you got your self a Bug. I was the same age as you when I got my first. Also a 67, loved it. And as for as dropping it or anything else. Its your car now, do what you want. But hold onto the parts to put it back encase you change your mind.

That car looks great! I'd swap the stock exhaust for dual quiet packs,slap on some BRM's and replace the stock beam with a CBPerformance 2" narrowed adjustable beam. It already has a custom interior, so what's the big deal?

Question:

The door has a small section rusted out. I've got it cover up to protect it from rain. But what should i do to fix it? cut it out and replace? Also, what would be a good spray paint that i could use temporarily as primer that is relativity close to Savannah Beige? Thanks

Try lowes or home depot for something close to savana beige. There is a topic in the body and paint section about close krylon matches.

Looks good, congrats on the purchase.

For the door, you have options. You can either repair it, or if it's beyond your skill, buy another door. Same with the fender, if the rust is too cancerous. The A pillar however will eventually need sheetmetal from what it looks like, and that's something that will require some cutting/welding. So either way, if you're up to the task you'll get some fab time in on it.

so it looks like i am getting a 1967 correct passenger door from my cousin in beige. og on the inside too. and buggut, whats wrong with the fuel filter??

They come loose and spray fuel in the engine compartment, causing a fire.

There's concern regarding having a filter inside the engine compartment because of the potential for the plastic to split, which could result in an engine fire. Most folks recommend putting the filter either underneath the fuel tank or above the transaxle. I have also heard that the setup should allow the pump to pull fuel through the filter rather than pushing it through, although I don't know if that's for sure an issue. I would recommend getting the proper German cloth-braided (5.5mm?) fuel line, too, and replace all of your rubber fuel line from the tank to the engine with that. It really fits well compared with the incorrect sizes offered at normal auto parts stores. It's a good idea to replace it every few years.
