I was just wonderin. WHat are my chances of finding one? I live in WA. I want a 23 window barndoor.its my dream car

I've got a Barndoor. If you count a '60 that we hacked a '52 decklid into a Barndoor too, well then I have two.

I would check some of the shows and occasionally you get a surprise. Just be ready to pay a hefty bit for one.

Good luck. Theres only about 40 deluxe barndoors known remaining. Half are outside the US.

I live in Michigan and have only seen one and its in the VW headquarters building in Aurburn Hills on display

bubblehead- i find it difficult to believe there are only 40 bd deluxes left worldwide. just off the top of my head i can think of about 15, just here in the US, plus more overseas. and i am by no means a bd deluxe expert and i don't claim to know them all, but i find it hard to believe that 20-25% of the world's remaining bd deluxes show up just at so-cal shows each year. i see one every day i go to "work".
also, what constitutes being "known"? is there some kind of all encompassing list somewhere? if there is, i would like to see it, out of interest.
i am not trying to give you crap, i am just curious. and yes i agree the chances of finding one are slim, but not impossible. just depends on the budget if/when one does pop up.
i think a more "rare" (i prefer 'seldom seen') bus would be a pre-59 westy. apparently they only made 1000 units up to 59, far less than bd deluxes.

I got that figure from the barndoor registry. I don't think anyone knows for sure but thats probably a reasonable guesstimate. Even in you doubled that figure its still not many to go around. Sure there are more rare buses to be had but the rarity/desirability combined make them hard to come by. Like a BINZ is far more rare, but as with any auto make, the trucks dont really appreciate in value the way that passenger and sports cars do. Or a double door barndoor. Super rare, but how often do you hear someone say thats their dream bus? Not often unless all your friends are barndoor nuts. Or the barndoor ambulance on eBay that hasn't sold? If it were a deluxe it would have sold the first day for twice the money. I wouldn't be surprised if 20% of the worlds barndoor deluxes showed up at the Classic. I can only think of like three on the East Coast and one of them is a non op project. It's by no means impossible to find a barndoor (pick a model) and the internet has made it alot easier. I lusted for a deluxe bd for a looong time and didn't score one till I found this site a few years ago.

Hazetguy- i pulled out that list for the first time in a year or so and I stand corrected. 40 in the US, 89 worldwide including 3 junked or parts cars. Of those, 15 were listed as from CA although lots of them just say USA so that number is most certainly higher. With that many around, bredaliens should be able to find one by the wkwnd. LOL!

mynameismud Mon Mar 31, 2003 7:39 am

well if anyone runs accross a BD panel- give it to me .........PLEASE- personally I would pass up a deluxe in seconds flat.

hazetguy Mon Mar 31, 2003 8:23 am

damn. i went to the link above and i can't find any list. i am a bit computer dumb though. anyway, maybe i am spoiled or maybe i am lucky, but i get to see bd's every day at "work", and some cool ones too!
true, there are not many to go around regardless of which model you choose.

mynameismud Mon Mar 31, 2003 8:27 am

well here in good 'ole inderana, you mention a barndoor, and that's what you get, some poor old farmers widow telling you she has one, but you need to bring your own tools and liquid wrench to get them off of the barn.
