Thanks, it wasn't easy or quick!!
Really the only thing I don't fully understand is the date of the engine. It has "FABRICAÇÃO: DESDE OUT/75 "
I think this mean "from 1975" ??? My Portuguese is weak!
Dave
Dave, The Google translate says:PRODUCTION: FROM OUT/75 I will make yet another guess- that may mean starting in 1975?? Good work anyway. Isn't the internet awesome? |

All I can say is 'Wow!' You guys are far more internet savvy than I. I'm stoked that you found that info. I like the fact that I may actually have a 1600 out of a van from Brazil. I'm going to click the links you've provided and read them. And yes, the internet is great, lol. Again, thanks for your help on this. |

To help clarify I reorganized the information in the Portuguese web site into an alphabetical order. There are a few engines in this chart that ar not in the chart Everett posted in the engine ID section. I also translated to English the best I could. I put question marks after items I could not translate, I believe for the most part they are abbreviations for a given month.
There are some model numbers that I'm not clear about as well. For instance the 10 and the 30.
Enjoy!!
Dave

Not from VW Brazil but from http://carrosehistorias.blogspot.com
Use accordingly
I'm not sure of the month words used so when in Doubt I used the Portuguese Word. If anyone can clarify please do so. If anyone has proper VW Brazil printed information to verifiy this information please let us know as well.

Dave, After a bit of searching, I think the "out" as in out/75 for the BZ engine is just the abbreviated word for October. In Portuguese October is Outubro. |

Thanks, October in my translator App is Outubro but that could just be conjugating and other Male / Female type grammar rules. I'm thinking that DEZ is also December but don't wish to jump to any incorrect conclusions.
Aha! Just checked.... Dezembro!!
April comes up as Abril which would be my ABR abbreviation.
May = Maio which could be the MAI
Now what is the ATE I wonder??? I'm thinking "through"??
The translation of Through into Portuguese has several options, one of which is ate' o fim de relating to time.
My iTranslate App on my iPhone is actually an amazing thing!
Anyone verify who knows Portuguese??

Just stirring this old thread up a bit by adding some confusion about Brazilian engines!
I have a bus engine with engine number BP 143729. Came from a Brazilian 15 window taxi and pulls very strongly. The stamping looks very straight and even. The engine is well built and has no oil leaks. Could this be a late 1600cc factory engine? |

Hello, this is my first post on this site. I've been a long time VW enthusiast and last year I bought my first Volkswagen bug(s). The one that had an engine has a BZ engine code. All this info has been very informative but I'm curious if parts are a problem? |

As usual I haven't had much luck finding information about the engine in my '66 with F 0802890. It's supposed to be a 1600 but who knows?
Any help will be appreciated. |

Based on that information along with other data I have found (F 0802890) it looks as though I have a 1300 in my car. I wonder where the original owner came up with the 1600 engine information after it was rebuilt.
Can you put 1600 jugs on a 1300 block? |

it was probably changed to a 1600 as 1300 jugs were hard to find and expensive |

So you're saying the jugs are interchangeable? I guess so huh? |

Quote: The BZ Brazilian Gas Van engine. I acquired a '73 Std. Beetle, with such an engine, about which I could find no other references. On removal, and disassembly, I found it to be a Brazilian single relief, small oil pump tube, basically a pre-70 single port short block, with a factory installed set of Brazilian dual port heads, intake, etc., as a later dual port engine. Thus: a factory '69 spec single port short block, with factory dual port upper end conversion, and yes, the dished VW Van piston/cylinders, in 85.5mm,1585cc size. The PO told me it was sold to him, as having a factory new long block 16,000 miles prior, and internally, it looked like it, with very low wear. Runs well, still stock.
