Parking (sleeping) under power lines - bad idea? Is my brain getting fried or attenuated to 60hz? 24 hours and I feel OK...

Altoona Wed Jan 25, 2012 2:41 pm

Just wear your tinfoil cap whilst sleeping.

You do have a tinfoil cap, don't you?

It depends on which side of the bed you use and if your feet face forward or rear.

I became aware of the amount of energy lost through the insulation this christmas. My led christmas lights within ten feet of my power lines stayed lit until I took them down last week. They have even conceived electric car technology that will let them charge by parking under high tension lines. The radiation is real so I'd stay away from them.

No, it doesn't matter which way your feet are facing because the power is alternating current. If the power were direct current, then I would suggest rolling over every 20 minutes and using a meat thermometer to check for doneness.

Well not to open a can of worms but .........

The whole debate about power lines, microwaves and cell phones causing cancer has very varied research results. Half of which says you will be ok the other half says death awaits.

One of the most interesting results I have seen is the effect 'stress' has on the cells being studied.

Cells that are stressed mutate, ones that are nor stressed do not. It is the environment that the cells are in that determines the outcome.

As you are a collective of 50 trillion cells, are you stressed while being under power lines. Are your emotions fear, anger, judgement, hatred, blame, guilt etc, if so, the research says move on. If you see the world through acceptance, enjoyment, enthusiasm, interest, then chances are you will be ok.

Personally that much emotional consciousness is for Buddhist monks. You may just want to be safe and move on. Too many variables.

ground yourself and you will be OK..

a thin copper wire attached to one of your toes, the other end to a nail that firmly attached to the ground...

hehe..

:D

I'd recommend staying out of buildings with alternating current in the walls.

You're just one big rat in a cage.

I am near power lines just about everyday as a telco employee as are many of
the guys I work with. Lots of them have been doing it for years. No high rates of cancer or issues that I have noticed.
I would be more worried about the dew that drips off in the morning
leaving black marks on your poptop or the fact birds like to sit on them leaving runny berry infused poops on your paint!
If it real humid/wet you might hear the sizzle of the moisture
burning off as it makes contact with the wires.
I wouldnt move under the power lines but a stay over night
wouldnt be a problem. Yes,I have seen houses built right under
high tension lines before. One was a modular that required two spotters
at all times to be sure the crane wouldnt make contact. I would worry
about one of the lines coming down on my house more than the EMF
issues.

Been doing all my life and only thing I noticed was a slight 'tick' and my hair loss.

But then again, maybe it was the government that made my hair fall out. Chef conspiracy theory number 2340. Secret agents have been working in my kitchens posing as Guatemalans and Columbians. They have been dropping a hair loss stimulation drug in my tea!

Damn it - I should have seen it before. Now I must add the Guatemalans and Columbians to my watch list!

:bay_blue: Really! only in area 51 otherwise you're OK, the rest of the USA is safe!

actually, the elec. co.s use a LOT of herbicides to save money on vegetation mowing, brush removal, etc.

I would avoid those areas or stay in the vehicle.

For some power lines you will pick up more emf by sleeping under an elec. blanket, BUT some are very high tension and can illuminate a fl. bulb held in your hand.

There is a weak correlation of various disorders with living (not camping) near high voltage power lines, so again the real issue would be the herbicide exposure.

I apologize for introducing facts into this sea of levity.

If parked under a power line, I tend to end up with more bird crap on my van.

DLJ Wed Jan 25, 2012 6:12 pm

Sell your van and sleep in the park.

drscope Wed Jan 25, 2012 6:32 pm

You're supposed to sleep in your van down by the river, not down by the power lines!

zozo Wed Jan 25, 2012 6:33 pm

If you can do this, it's time to move on.

EverettB Wed Jan 25, 2012 6:35 pm

Normal power lines? No.

High tension lines? I wouldn't.

A friend of mine had a late '90s Ford Taurus and whenever he drove under high tension lines his speedometer would sometimes drop to zero. The speedo would take a few seconds to start working again.

VintageVulture Wed Jan 25, 2012 9:31 pm

That's why I moved to Ferndale  We don't have electricity yet!

I worked on a Honda VT750CA that would die if driven under a high tension line. That's was a pain in the ass to diag.
