The number one question I get while workin on keys, locks, handles, and ignitions for Volks? Where can I find my key code? So here goes! I will upload pics of various makes/models/years as I can.

FIRST TIP! Get some sandpaper or a wire brush to help expose the Key Code

If you have a year/model you are lookin to find the code for that you don't see here...just ask, I may have something in stock that I can get a picture of a code location for you.

There is always a letter or letters involved with codes. Except for Vanagons. The N maybe not be present.

SG - 54 to 59 Bug (Example SG103)
SE - 60 Only Bug (Example SE47)
SC, SV, SU - 61 to 66 Bug (Example SC12, SV87, SU110)
K - 67 to 70 Bug (Example 12K031)
M - 71 to 79 Bug (Example 37M110)
D,F,E,V,Z - 54 to 63 Bus (Example 1D, 4F, 1E2, 2V, 3Z2)
T - 64 to 66 Bus (Example T3128)
L - 67 to 70 Bus (Example 23L098)
R - 71 to 79 Bus (Example 32R101)
N - 80 to 91 Vanagon (Example N9210 OR 9210)
VB - Various late 70s to early 80s (Example VB4680)

Various codes in no particular order:

64-66 Bus Key Codes are T series...Example: T3307

Ignition 64-66 Bus:

Front Door Handle 64 -66 Bus:

Rear Hatch Lock 64-66 Bus:

More to come...

This may be part of the "more to come", but I have to add... :D

For water-cooleds (excluding Vanagon):
VB ('74-'79)
HV ('80-'87)
AH ('88-'93)
AN (valet, '88-'93)
NV (valet, '85-'87)
VB (valet, '80-'84)

Four-digit code is found on the door handles and ignition switch.

Is there such a thing as a locking deck lid handle for a '67 sedan, using a K code?

Can you tell me how many screw holes there are in the decklid? One or three?

I do have a K code deck lid lock. But I do know the 67 Bus has a one year only deck lid lock.

There are three mounting holes on a '67 decklid... Thanks

Sorry for the delayed response, Dean. Yes, there is a locking decklid lock available for a 67 Bug with a K code. I myself do not have any in stock right now. If you scan the ads, I am sure there may be a few available.

I just looked at my original keys, and wrote down the numbers, back in 1972 and in 1976. One advantage of being a second owner !!!

I have the numbers on my keys as well as in my owners manual. (4th owner) I should get some spares just in case.

Vanagon Key Code locations:

Front Door Handles have the code located on a post on the back of the handle. Alot of times, the post has a corrosion build up that needs filed off to expose the code. (first picture)

A way to see what post has the code if you cannot see it at first, turn the handle with the posts facing you directly. One post has a flat side, where the key code is located.(second picture)

These codes can be tricky because they can be read upside down. To be sure you have it the right way, hold the handle with the key hole up top.
Third picture is a code outlined with black marker to see better.

This is wrong. The switch in the pic is a 58-59 switch. The 54-57 switch looks different because the oval's dash is a different shape.
Sometimes the codes are stamped on the body of the switch too. And some switches have no code whatsoever!

That picture was posted to give a general idea of where most codes are located for 54-59 SG codes on ignitions. Yes, the 54-57 ignition has a longer mounting tab. All are SG codes, which I was referring to.

If you do not see a code, be sure to try to locate a VW emblem or part number to be sure it is not aftermarket.

Early Bay Window Bus Key Codes

68-70 Buses are L Codes...Example: 23L098

L series Key Blank

The housings from 68-70 vary but the idea is the same. A tension spring has to be depressed to release the ignition barrel.

The front door handles are held on by two 4mm screws. Once handle is removed, the code will be at one of two locations.(seen in first picture)

Rear Hatch Lock

For a 65 Notch?

dumptdeluxe Sun Mar 11, 2012 8:16 pm

Yes, please

SteelersBus Sun Mar 11, 2012 8:40 pm

I have door locks. But not any 65 Notch Ignitions. This picture should help locate your code on your door lock. It will be a...A followed by 4 digits.

And if ya want any cut by code, I just picked up some OE German Huf steel key blanks that I can cut a factory fresh key onto! :-)

Just a lil nudge since I've had a few questions lately on where to locate key codes. :-)
