the original esci/italeri 1/9 kubel was reboxed by revell and still available. I remember going through the build instructions and noting all the bits that needed correcting - fan housing, shock towers etc
I see there's a platinum edition with extra detail etched parts

I entered a half dozen models at the recent Southlandz Model Car Swap Meet & Contest in Largo, Florida, and won two of the
six classes I entered. It was participant choice, so the judges were our fellow builders!
The AMT Superbug landed in the Nostalgia Door Slammer class.
The "Gunzegram" was in Street Machine.
The IMC/Union mini-stock was in Short Track.
The Revell 13-window won van class against some tough competition.
The Revell 3-in-1 was put in road racing class despite it being a desert racer.
And lastly, the Revell Herbie won Star Car
With 40 classes, surprisingly there was no off-road class, leading to some miscategorizing, but no complaints. It was nice to
finally bring some of these out into the daylight. I'm already planning for next year. |

I added some sheet styrene and strips to fill in the missing panel behing the back seat and correct the warped floor in the storage compartment. I also filled in the ends of the heater channels and got rid of the big gaps in the kit body.
I used some Tamiya putty to fill the HUGE sunken spots on the top part of the dash support and corner braces
I used some Mr. Surfacer 500 to fill in the seams in the heater channels and the braces in the rear 1/4 panels
I cut off the locating lug for the beam so the beam will sit in the correct position on the front bulkhead and filled in the hole with .100 styrene. And i scratchbuilt an inspection cover and used some Meng bolt head details.
I'm deviating from the instructions and building the body as a seperate piece, more like the real car. It's letting me correct some issues with the kit.

I have been writing for the VolksWorld and HotVWs magazine monthly for years with
interests more on the Vintage VW toys and memorabilia arena.
Here is my 99 Cent Special Toy Nomura VW Cabrio that went thru the R-V Shop and
was featured in the Jan 2023 issue of VolksWorld magazine.
Send me a PM if you would like to see the article . . . .

Gettin close to finishing the initial build and paint. The spring holder broke on the left rear swing arm and the steering box locked up after I turned the wheels few times so a moving suspension and working steering are no longer.....damn.....
Still have to figure out the cloth top. The instructions are less than vague. And fabricate some front seat cushions, the kit ones are horrid.

In 1969, Revell entered into a marketing deal with Disney Productions to produce a model of Herbie, and for the new kit
Revell used the tooling for its '68 VW, so its Herbie model was based on a '68 rather than a '63! This time around, Revell Herbie
is portraying the split-in-half car from the end of the film. For my model, I used mostly recycled parts from original kits.
This model was a request from a Herbie collector friend from up north, and will be making the trek up there later this year. |

| Very cool! I had to look up the Revel Herbie kit, they modified the '68 tooling to add the sliding ragtop and added correct bumpers so it could be Herbie but didn't bother with the correct tail-lights! |

Yes, it has its issues, but was a promo item for the first film in 1969, as well as being reissued with different box art for the sequel in 1974, so there is a direct connection to the films.
