So when I talked to the po of my Wolfsburg Weekender - she said she "had the head gaskets done" about 30-50k ago on an engine that shows 180k on the clock. The shop she used said they"normally don't use new heads" when they do the gaskets (she couldn't find the receipt and didn't recall specifics about the job).

I have since had the gaskets re-done because they leaked (po had some overheating issues that I figured out- new/used radiator fixed the problem) - my mechanic did the gaskets right and no problem with leaking now. And, compression tests in the 130-135 range all around. Funny thing, though, I notice that the top of the heads have "AMC" stamped on them. When I asked my mechanic how they looked (the heads) when he did the gaskets, he said "perfect."

Therefore, either she isn't recalling correctly that she had new heads put on when she had the last gasket job done (30-50k ago) or a prev owner to her had new heads done, right? I mean AMC didn't come stock on new vanagons and I also assume that when many of these were done "by warrantee" early on due to the corrsion/pitting issue, the dealers didn't use AMC. So, I guess I'm happy to find out that the engine has, in fact, "newer" AMC heads (perhaps as old as 30-50k). Is this a correct line of thinking?

Yes.

The original set of heads may have been replaced the first time the head gaskets failed at around 80,000 miles from new.

Thanks for the feedback - I was surprised to see the "AMC" stamp and suspected it wasn't factory, nor dealer installed.

Does anyone know when AMC WBX heads started showing up here in NA? I remember seeing them back in the early '90's, but I'm wondering if they were available during the T3 production run.
