Oldest magazine article? 2 November 1949. They call it a "Lieferwagen" or "delivery van" at the time since the model name had not yet been determined. So everyone that gets scolded for calling a VW Bus a VW Van, they are technically correct :)

omnibus in German is used as stated above.
Wanted to add that the word is originally Latin ( old Roman) and means 'to all' 'with all' ' all together'
glad I had Latin education in highschool. makes you understand a lot of languages quicker.
