They're on Amazon, too, and the nice thing about getting them there is that you can get a four-year warranty through Square Trade for $20 to $30 depending on the size.

$319 free shipping sound to good to be true?
That looks very similar to my Norcold, but 35 qt. instead of 43. Looks like a pretty good deal to me.
It's a slippery slope, just like everything else with Vanagons. I started with the Norcold and ended up with a solar panel on the roof.
Oh--this is a good opportunity to answer anybody who says a Yeti cooler is as good as a refrigerator. Having used my fridge for the past few years, then renting a vanagon with an ice chest instead of a fridge, I can tell you without question that there is no comparison between the two. Soggy sandwich meat SUCKS. |

Has anybody had a problem with plugs on an engel? I do and want to hard wire to my blueseas fuse box. The manual says the unit will not work without the plug. |

Correction! I misread the manual. Just hard wired the unit and will try it as soon as the battery charges up. I hope this works as I've only used it once. It will not work on 12 volts with plug. Works fine on 110 volts. If this doesn't work, it will be warranty time. |

Having had a turkey sandwich get drowned on a kayak trip earlier this year, I can assure you that it's the soggy sandwich bread that really sucks. :-&

Considering Engel sells this:
...for you to hardwire with (for $30-50), I don't see why you couldn't just snip the plug off and run the existing wires to your Blue Seas panel using a proper amp fuse like us ARB folks do.
Edit: Just saw your update. Fingers crossed that it works! :D |

I had spilled something on the end of the 12v plug and the spring loaded tip of the plug was "stuck" and not making consistent contact, I took it apart and cleaned it and its been working fine since. |

My engel is hardwired now and the 12 volt side still won't work. Does anybody know where I can get it repaired in California? I live in central Calif. but will travel. Thanks |

If you have a multimeter I would make sure power is getting from the 12v plug to the compressor.
The fridge does work on 110v power though? |

Getting 12.8 volts to plug in on reefer. Yes 110 volts works great.
Thanks |

You have confirmed that it is getting to the "motor"?
Isn't there a 12v fuse by the plug as well? I loaned my Engel to a friend for a few weeks or I'd go look at it. |

This is where I'm at as of recent. 37 qt fridge/freezer. Spent many many years with the icy world.
I find it a decent size and fit for my needs. There was a time when it was on sale. It was 3 hun delivered to my door. The mechanics seem to be almost two stage, with a six minute run time. The first three minutes is at a slow speed then the next three is at an elevated speed. Amp draw is from 2.5 to just below 4. Avg is 3.5 for the cycle. It is new to me and hasn't had much run time. Like all new equipment, I'm sure it will loosen up a bit with time.
The painful part is that I am sure that since we're in a parts-is-parts world, lord knows from whom any of this comes from.
ya makes yer choices and ya pays yer money. YMMV. I'm happy.

The Max Burton uses that exact control panel as the Dometic as shown in Waldi's pic. So there ya have it, parts-is-parts |

Great discussion on this blog about the Max Burton and power consumption.
Note, due to the impending eclipse, there has been a spike in pricing on most fridges and camping gear in general.
