The diagrams I've seen make it look like it just slides in with no clamps etc to hold it (or the seals) tightly together with the tank. That doesn't seem right. How do you reinstall the filler neck after replacing a gas tanks?

Yes, just slide it in. There is a large rubber grommet that seals it. I lubed it slightly with grease and it went in no problem.

^ yup. You kinda just steer it into place to clear the expansion tanks and then back it out a bit and twist to line up the 3 screws. Works a treat.

push it in past the point where you think it cant go any deeper, to the second ring. use plenty of silicone spray. slowly remove while rotating as posted above.

Make sure that you have the proper tank gasket for your filler - earlier and later sizes are different.

OK, that will take care of the fuel tank end of things. How do I release the neck from the body in order to get the play I need to move it around? I have a plastic filler neck and I think I read somewhere that it doesn't have the 3 screws? Does the part of the filler accessable from the outside of the body (where the gas cap goes) have to be removed or does the neck disconnect from beneath the vehicle/inside the wheel well?

Thanks for the help. With snow in the forecast (and currrently on my lawn) this seems like the perfect time to replace and reseal my leaky rusty tank.

Remove the gas cap, remove the 3 screws, (may need to loosen the expansion tank) twist the (filler neck) night away

Don't skimp on the lube! If it's not lubed well enough, the gasket/grommet will prefer to stay with the filler neck instead of the hole in the tank it's meant to be sealing as you pull the filler back to its place on the body. If that seal isn't good, you'll have a rusty tank again before too long.

I think I had to drop my new tank 2 or 3 times to retrieve grommets and gaskets that dropped in due to insufficient lubrication. Not very fun!
