| Car is looking great! Congrats on the win...again, well deserved. Speaking of driving in the snow, I ran a 63 bug for a couple years in the 90s... My favorite memories from that time are driving it in the snow. I wish we didn't use so much salt on the roads here, otherwise I think I would (when done) take the square out for a spin in the winter now and then. |

This weekend's show was cut short due the storm coming in from Wy. I've never seen older, mature men became really concerned as they had no means (trailer) to get their cars home. I slipped out while the flakes were small and got the car home and went back for my truck. By the time I got back home the flakes larger and steady in their fall. Over all I had a good time. Took 1st place for the second year. Here are a few pics from the show...
Now, back to the engine build.

It's been such a long time since I've posted on my squareback... back in June of 2022 I was heading into the hills for a drive. There are certain hills i like to climb at a good speed and I was on one of them. I crested the hill, A large plume of white smoke came from the under the car and immediately took it out of gear and coasted to the side of the road till I was able to turn into the parking area of the Old McDonald animal petting zoo parking lot. I knew I pushed too hard and something gave. I got out and took a look under the car as I could see a trail of oil coming into the parking lot.
Looking under the car, I could see a pool oil and after lifting the lid, I had oil all over the place.
I called a friend to get a rider back to my place where I hitched up my trailer to my truck and went back out to retrieve my car. I was so mad and upset at myself for pushing as hard as I did going up the hill that I was rushing to load the car onto the trailer. In doing so, My driver door took an 9 inch crease from rubbing on the trailer fender. That didn't sit well with me.
I let the car sit in the garage for a few months as I didn't want to mess with it as life takes over and I've been working on my Corvan as well as working on my masters program as well as work. Last year I pulled the engine and looked it over. I had oil leaks from each jug. From the spillage of oil on the tins, I found that oil breather tube had a crack under the egg-shaped bowl and the hose that connects the oil tube failed spewing oil onto the exhaust pipes. Because of the way I had oil all over my lower tins, I decided to forego a compression test and break the engine down to a short block and take a look at the pieces. I'm glad I did as I found the number 3 jug destroyed and the number 4 was right behind it with a hairline fracture. Here's #4 as #3 pic didn't want to upload as I've tried several times to load it. It's worse than #4...
I got a new set of pistons and rings, cleaned and honed the jugs and reassembled that. I also decided on new heads. My buddy Brian of Type-E Motorsports did the machine work for my 94mm jugs and pistons and I re-checked my rocker geometry and began to reassemble to a long block. So that's where I am at the moment. I'll be installing a CB performance Type3 alternator as well as a set of Webers. Hope to get it back on the road this spring. The door will get corrected when I have the ¬¬car driving once again. I hate to see it when I go into the garage as it's never look this bad (to me) but I sure miss driving it.

Well, hopefully the scratch is just in the clear coat. I only say that, as I see white in the scratch (clear coat), versus blue (paint). Wet it down and see if it changes color, as that'll tell you how deep it is. It still sucks, but something like that can be easily written off as something fell in the garage, or you backed into something you couldn't see, and bumped the car. It's like I told a friend of mine, a falling shovel handle will do more damage than rocks being kicked up because of a construction zone (he had one go thru the glass before, and it whistled, until he replaced the glass). He's also had the glass fall out of a mirror before and chip the paint in 2 places. It went all the way down to the epoxy primer layer (no rust formed there even after 10 years of being outside).
It's good to see you've still got the car (even if it looks like a "barn find." :lol: It won't be long before you get the engine rebuilt and the car driving again. |

I think a wash might be a bit therapeutic. Then grab a soft indoor cover for it to keep it from getting that dusty again.

Good on you for being out and driving.
these are then things that happen when you do so.
My car sits in the garage all dusty like that right now as well.
Keep telling myself that the next restoration will be easier than the last one! :lol: |
