I have a '71 westy with a 1600 single port engine,the 1-st two digits are
AE,which tells me that that engine was a dual port, dual relief engine.I'm
in the process of installing D.P. heads, which required changing the two
top center studs to the shorter ones, heads are installed w/new push-rod
tubes and seals, torqued the heads first sequence to 7 ft. lbs and then the
second sequence to 23 ft. lbs, installed the push rods and rocker arm
assembly and the gap for the valve clearance is way too much,I don't
even think the adjusters will take up enough for the proper 006 valve
clearance, are the pushrods a little longer or are the rocker shaft assy
different from a single vs,a dual port engine? appreciate any advice! |

Hopefully, you measured your P/C deck height and CC'd the combustion chambers before installing the new heads.
You probably will to go through the procedure of setting up your rocker geometry at 1/2 valve lift to solve this one - and - the procedure isn't in the Bentley manual.
- You'll need a .001" dial gauge and adjustable stand for it
- An adjustable push-rod
The above photo shows the adjuster screw aligned in a straight line with the valve stem when valve is at 1/2 lift.
You have to look into the exhaust port to see the valve stem.
To get you started there are 9 pages of Samba discussion below:

If the push rods were too long, I'd say shim the rocker pedestals.
If the PR's are too short, that's a more expensive problem. Rather than getting new push rods made, there are couple of band aids you can use - if you find the push rods are too short.
- Either elephant feet adjuster screws from CB Performance or some ball foot adjuster screws
- Install lash caps to your valve stems, which don't come off unless you have a special puller.

My article was specifically written for Type 4 engines. While the concept remains the same most everything is different in regard to a type 1 based engine.. |
