Snapped my last head stud on a wasser repair.

2.2, go ahead...anything larger plan on doing some to the tranny.
I myself have been thinking about a second daily driver and would like to use a 2.2 with an auto, purely for lazy reliable factor

does that help? oh I have a 2.2 swap in the classifieds

I have a friend with a auto Vanagon and Subie engine. They say that top speed is limited by the gearing of the AT and wish they had a manual tranny.

I have a auto tranny with a 98 Subie 2.2 in a 90 van. Except for the lower miles per gallon I cannot praise it enough. I have the govenor shaved pretty good and it will up and cruise. If I'm climbing a steep gradient speed will drop down to about 58mph and I just kick the peddle to the floor and whoa step back. It will quickly pull to about 65 and then naturally shift back to 3rd gear. Now that feels good. A very reliable tranny. And as you read above I'm not over kind to it. Shave that govenor. Use that torque. Wind it out a bit. Merv [/list]

We have an 88 Westy auto with an '08 Impreza Vanaru. The 2.5 revs higher than the 2.1 wasser and is definitely noisier than the 2.1 stock but the torque more than makes up for it. Would a lower final drive be better? Probably, but cost is always a consideration.

I have an Auto with a 95 Ej22.

I have the largest tires you can fit on a 2wd, 225/75/15 to lower the rpm's.

They weight so much it doesn't help the MPG.

I have shaved the govenor,

Put in a modified rabbit valve body that changed the shift points, from GTA

Audi 5000 Turbo 4 pinion planetary gears and bigger direct/rev clutch with an extra clutch disc and the forward clutch has an extra disc. All new steels and frictions and bushings and master set from GTA.

The torque converter was lowered 400 rpm's to make up for the more torque of the Subaru.

Has been very reliable and couldn't be any tougher.

Now, I am considering pulling the Subaru and Auto to put in a 4 speed and a TDI for the fuel economy.

er Jeff et al, why not just fit the reversed Subaru 5 speed that matches the engine? It's perfectly matched to the torque characteristics of your engine and will have you purring along the highway.

Cost is always a factor but if you pick up a good transmission core, the $2200 reversing kit will have you driving 5 gears in no time.

It already purrs down the highway, just at 18mpg at 3500 rpm's, not optimum.

Yes your trans it the way to go, wish it was available before I built my auto, that wasn't cheap either!!!

My 90 Carat with an ALH TDI-E with a vw 4 speed with a .7 4th has got me up to 36mpg.

The only thing that will beat that is when you get the adapter plate done to put an ALH TDI to your reversed ringed Suby trans

I'll be in on that!

? I really don't get your question? What heck does auto VS 4 speed as to do with a engine conversion?

Captain Pike Sun Jun 10, 2012 7:32 pm

Want to keep the auto trans. If I want to shift manual then I drive my 181
Back so bad now I can't lift my left leg enough to hit the clutch if I wanted to.

Answer to your frigging bizarre post:

60 conversion done, half of them are auto. No need to modified anything on short to medium therm.

The adaptor plate for the 058 / AFN TDI is already done and installed in a Vanagon - will that do?

Oh by the way, the 5 speed reversed Subie AUTO is nearly done.
Might put a Subie TDI boxer behind one of those and see how it all goes.

We have been happy with out 2.2 conversion with an auto. The biggest improvement is taking off from a stop. Feels like twice the pep, you have to go easy on the throttle to keep the tires from chirping when pulling out into traffic. We have 27/8.5r14 tires on it at this point, which means it doesn't have much more tractive effort in high gear than the WBXer did with the stock 205/70r14s. I certainly wouldn't want it geared any higher or to have a torque converter with a lower stall, the 2.2 seems to be matched very well to the stock VW auto box.

We get about 19 mpg on the highway, which is about one MPG less than the 2.1 WBXer did.
