Great Thread! Looking forward to your progress. Curious, do you know the weight difference between the A/C engine and the Turbo Diesel?

Sailor Jerry Sun Jun 24, 2012 4:43 pm

No I don't, if anybody does feel free to post it

Back in business. Moved a cross the country these past couple months and the car was sitting in multiple pieces in multiple states for awhile. Delay was a bummer but at least I now have a garage

That sounds wonderful. Glad your back in business. Anxious to see your progress. Went to the Eureka Springs VW Show and saw a beetle with a three cylinder (Kubota, I think) tractor engine mounted in it. I suspect it was underpowered. I did not get to talk with the owner.

decided that since im a square I would switch to square tubing so Im remaking the cradle/supports. Will have to order mounts this week and decide how to fit them to it. Picked up a cheap work car to keep me busy, diesel jetta coupe and also found a picture of my old diesel truck that some of you might enjoy

Ran into an issue last night as it seems the starter is binding, pulled It out and it turns over by hand but installed it won't. Didn't figure it could turn the td over fast enough anyway but if anybody hs any info or suggestions pass it on -thanks

What kind of pipe did you use for the coolant lines?

AirDirect Sun Sep 09, 2012 7:20 pm

I know someone who switched to bio diesel in a 1986 TD Jetta and ended up having to rebuild the injection pump as the bio diesel caused all the seals to start leaking. I am told newer pumps use a different type of seal material and this should not be a problem.

Sloride wrote: What kind of pipe did you use for the coolant lines? just some cheap galvanized pipe, considering running rubber lines through my heater channels.
Haven't looked very deeply into bio yet but I'm pretty sure there are a few seals and possibly rubber lines to replace much like you would with e85.
Spent tonight modifying some stock mounts that I think I can make work, also decided to redesign my cradle again, hopefully for the last time lol

It should be fine for the mockup phase but when you are ready to go live you should get some proper tubing bent by a pro. Conduit is not very strong and when the bends have kinks that makes them especially weak.

Thanks for the tip but I've already switched to square tubing and changed the design around so hopefully I won't have any issues

Any updates? Pictures?

Thanks

jetta took up alot of my time recently because I need it for work but I have started on the beetle again. Just picked up CB wide 5 drop spindles and disk brakes. Also started cleaning up and re running the wiring under the hood. Hoping to start digging into it full time soon. Thanks for the interest

I've seen a couple diesel conversions to date and they both had a Vanagon transaxle swapped in, I believe because of the additional weight and torque of the diesel motor. It might be something you'd want to research, as far as I know it's possible to get an adapter kit with mounts from a dune buggy parts supplier because the transaxles are fairly popular in buggies and sand rails.

You sure the oil is going to return to the PAN right with the engine angled like that?

Sailor Jerry Sat Nov 03, 2012 12:52 am

Yes, gravity and I are good friends and he said he would take care of it. Should be back in the main garage tomorrow and I may post some pics. Thanks for the vanagon tip, I'll keep it in mind
