Hi,
i found these speedo dated 8/46 some days ago. It was lying for the last 50 years in the basement of a former VW-dealer in Berlin. Does anyone know anything about this speedo? I’m happy about any hint about were these speedo was applied.
Greetz,
Nicolas

Looks like a younger brother of the Berlin/Rome car speedo.
There where some vw based race cars after the war.
I would guess it comes out of one of those. |

If this was for a production car I would call it "Wunschdenken".

That would be awesome for a split or barndoor with a beefed up motor :)
and, a beetle is certainly able to hit 160km per hour, 100mph, n the speedo, just takes a longer hill on the autobahn

Interesting how the paint on that VW emblem tab has fared much better than that of the main speedo dial. |

When did that speedometer ended? I am seeing two different kind of split speedometer. That one in pic above and other one with brown, ivory face. |

Very interesting find. BTW, the "0.49" on the housing is the rolling ratio (0.49 rotations per meter), this is the same at the 16" wheel beetles have always used, which means it was intended for a car with stock wheel sizes. Of course if it were built for a racer, they may have opted for the best wheel for that, and not cared about speedo accuracy. |

From what I understand VDO/Viegel made these for a number of vehicles in this design. It does have to be said that that VW tag at the top seems to have been added at a later date (aren't blue tags for '48 models?).
I also thought that '46 speedometers had the drive exiting at 90 degrees to the case rather than at 45 degrees (maybe that change happened before 8/46, I aam not sure). |

Yes, but it also has the VW L-part number stamped on the back, so it would seem it was made for VW....... of course they may have just used that housing because that is what they had available. |

Thanks for your opinions. The only thing I can certainty say is that the speedometer definitely was deposited since the mid-fifties and no one has changed anything on it. Perhaps someone has photos of something similar? |

What does it look like?
It is a vw based race car.
The info I have says it has a 1,1 Liter VW engine, so it maybe is Kübel based.
The engine was modified to 42 PS and the lightweight body made it a 380 Kilogramm car.
I do not know its top speed but a speedo with the stock vw range was not enough for sure. |

I've just been informed that the speedometer is from a Petermax Mueller record-breaking car. |
